Description: The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is a highly specialized healthcare professional who works closely with the nuclear medicine physician. Some of the primary responsibilities include preparing and administering radioactive chemical compounds, known as radiopharmaceuticals. The technologist performs patient imaging procedures using advanced radiation-detecting instrumentation. They accomplish computer processing and imaging enhancement. Analyzing biologic specimens in the laboratory is also part of their role. The technologist provides images, data analysis, and patient information to the physician for diagnostic interpretation. During imaging procedures, the technologist works directly with the patient. They gain the patient's confidence by obtaining pertinent history, describing the procedure, and answering any questions. Monitoring the patient's physical condition during the procedure is essential. The technologist notes any specific patient comments that might indicate the need for additional images or that might be useful to the physician in interpreting the results. The technologist ensures that all Nuclear Medicine images are of optimum diagnostic quality. They follow pre-determined image criteria to assess images for required measurements, volumes, and anatomical information. All images must include required demographic information, charts, graphs, and measurements to maintain diagnostic quality. The technologist operates all diagnostic Nuclear Medicine processing and printing equipment to create quality final images. They ensure all required data is present on the final printed data sheet. The technologist operates nuclear medicine equipment and selects the correct computer and technical factors. Proper operation of image processors and printers is necessary to ensure diagnostic quality images. Assessing patients to ensure optimum imaging techniques is a critical function. For women of childbearing age, appropriate precautions are taken to determine if the patient may be pregnant. Extra precautions are taken for pregnant women to minimize exposure to radioactive substances and potentially harmful radiation. Utilizing appropriate computer programs and technical factors optimizes images. The technologist reviews physician orders for accuracy before starting examinations and maintains records for licensure. They document on requisitions confirming the review of orders and coordinate all records to meet the required standards. Completing patient orders and charges ensures exams are scheduled accurately, maintaining proper records. Accurate entry of orders and charging procedures into the computer system is necessary. The technologist coordinates the daily schedule and operates the computer scheduling of exams. They ensure film accuracy and enter patient information into the computer system. Maintaining a safe environment for patients by ensuring hazardous objects are not accessible is essential. The technologist assures that the environment is free of objects that may contribute to patient falls, slips, or trips. They are sensitive to older patients who may have hearing difficulties and communicate clearly without being excessively loud. Correct interpretation of verbal and nonverbal responses to pain is crucial. Taking appropriate actions to minimize the patient's level of pain using various techniques is expected. The technologist is aware of the increased risk of falls for elderly patients and provides accommodation as needed.
