Your Impact at SAM

As a Phase Manager, you will play a pivotal role in the planning, execution, and delivery of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) projects. You will oversee both field and office operations, ensuring accurate, efficient, and cost-effective outcomes. This role requires strong leadership and technical insight, as you’ll be managing teams that identify, locate, and map underground utilities for public and private infrastructure projects.

You’ll serve as a direct point of contact for clients, field crews, and internal project managers. You’ll ensure that deliverables meet quality expectations and project timelines. This position also supports project billing, proposal development, and change order processing.

Execute project work plans and monitor resource needs for SUE projects

Oversee field crew scheduling and office staff coordination to meet project deadlines

Train, mentor, and manage staff, promoting technical growth and team performance

Communicate scope, safety requirements, and quality expectations clearly to field teams

Provide regular budget updates and resource utilization reports using project tracking tools

Manage QA/QC processes related to utility records research, field data collection (e.g., GPR, EM), and final deliverables

Review utility maps, CAD drawings, and geophysical data for accuracy and completeness

Collaborate with Project Managers to support proposal writing, budgeting, and change management

Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsiveness and technical credibility

Represent SAM at meetings and presentations with clients, municipalities, and stakeholders

What You Bring to SAM

Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Surveying, Construction Management, or related field. Relevant work experience will also be considered in lieu of formal education

5+ years of experience in Subsurface Utility Engineering, with a strong understanding of SUE methods and technologies

Previous leadership or team management experience in a utility or geospatial environment

Proficiency with MicroStation or AutoCAD

Strong understanding of utility records research, field verification, and utility conflict identification

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across field and office teams

EIT or PE license (or ability to obtain) preferred

Proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously
