A pipefitter assists in the layout, fabrication, installation, testing and repair of pipe & plate system; fits pipe/plate and steel components properly prepares joints for welding to meet the specific requirements of the system on which work is being done; works from blueprints and makes fabrication sketches from which another mechanic could fabricate a unit of pipe/plate; lays out and figures offset bends; supervise and coordinate activities of assigned tacker(s); and accurately assists in other aspects of ship construction, fitting, and launching.

Duties and Responsibilities

Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates. Enter and work in confined spaces. Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights. Traverse and negotiate uneven heights between dock and vessel. Traverse and negotiate uneven surfaces. Ascend and work at heights of up to 40 feet. Occasional rigging. Critical Demands

Repetitive forward bending, rotation of the trunk, and flexing of the hips and the knees. Lifting no greater than 50 lbs. from floor to 6 ft. work surface unassisted. Repetitive upper extremity movements while measuring, fitting, and welding. Sustained lifting of 25-35 lbs. at arm’s reach above head. Working Conditions

The employee must comply with established company safety rules and OSHA standards. The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear required personal protective equipment as prescribed under OSHA standards. Must be able to hear warning signals and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations, and warnings. Work is outdoors or in open warehouse. There is no air conditioning or heating. Uneven surfaces throughout job site, with sand, limestone, concrete, and railways outside, as well as concrete and railways inside. Numerous trip hazards throughout.
