The Baltimore Sun is seeking a visuals expert who can capture and produce engaging video content and still imagery for all of The Baltimore Sun’s platforms. The ideal candidate is skilled in video capture and production. They also should possess a strong journalism background to uphold our commitment to accurate, impactful storytelling.
Essential Functions
Capture engaging social video content, including B-roll, interviews, and short-form videos tailored for platforms like Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, and Facebook.
Collaborate with reporters, editors, and the social media team to develop visual content that complements editorial coverage and aligns with The Baltimore Sun’s brand.
Edit video content to create polished, platform-specific assets.
Stay up-to-date with visual storytelling trends, social media formats, and emerging tools to keep content innovative and competitive.
Shoot professional-quality still photography for news stories, features, and promotional content across digital and print platforms.
Contribute to brainstorming sessions for creative campaigns and multimedia projects.
Ensure all visual content adheres to journalistic ethics and The Baltimore Sun’s standards for accuracy and quality.
Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in videography, journalism, photography, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Experience shooting video content, preferably in a media, news, or creative environment.
Comfortable conducting on-camera interviews and directing subjects to capture authentic, engaging footage.
Experience with video and photo editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom, or similar) is strongly preferred.
Familiarity with social media platforms and content creation best practices for audience engagement.
Strong visual storytelling skills with an eye for composition, lighting, and detail.
Ability to work in a fast-paced newsroom, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to breaking news scenarios.
Proficiency in shooting stills with professional cameras (e.g., DSLR or mirrorless systems) and capturing high-quality video (B-roll, interviews, etc.).
Knowledge of Baltimore’s local culture and communities is a plus.
Must be able and willing to work irregular hours and holidays as necessary
Preferred Skills
Experience with photo editing software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom).
Familiarity with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva) for creating social media assets.
Understanding of social media analytics and optimization strategies.
Experience with live event coverage or live streaming.
Salary Range: $43,000 to $60,000
Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
