Position Summary

The Area Director/Program Support role serves school-age children (ages 5–12) in before- and after-school settings, providing direct support to Group Leaders and enhancing the program experience through thoughtful curriculum development, preparation, and leadership. This person must be collaborative, creative, and committed to nurturing youth and supporting staff in a dynamic learning environment.

Core Responsibilities

Develop and implement engaging, age-appropriate enrichment activities and curriculum. Set up and maintain safe, welcoming program spaces. Support and guide Group Leaders to ensure smooth program delivery. Keep accurate and organized program records. Create an achievement-oriented environment that supports learning and growth. Serve as a site lead and direct supervisor for Group Leaders across multiple sites. Enforce positive behavior guidance and discipline strategies consistently. Empower students and staff to model YMCA values. Lead project-based learning initiatives. Collaborate with and report to the Coordinator of School Age Children and Executive Director of Education.

Qualifications

Minimum two years of supervisory experience required. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Experience working with school-age children in educational or recreational settings. Ability to collaborate effectively with children, families, and diverse team members. Comfort with basic technology and online communication tools. Passion for youth development and belief in the Y’s mission and values.

Work Environment And Physical Demands

Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Must be able to move quickly and safely in active environments. Specific vision requirements include close and distance vision. Reasonable accommodations will be made as needed for individuals with disabilities.
