Course Manager
Position Summary: The Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking a highly organized and technically skilled Course Manager with experience in cell and molecular biology techniques related to fundamental questions in the biological sciences, to support the successful delivery of intensive academic courses. This role bridges academic instruction, laboratory logistics, and hands-on student engagement. The Course Manager will collaborate closely with faculty, guest lecturers, and students to ensure the course runs smoothlyfrom planning to final wrap-upwhile also providing instructional and technical support as needed. Key Responsibilities: Course Coordination & Planning Serve as the primary operational liaison between faculty, staff, and students before and during the course. Anticipate and coordinate all academic, logistical, and laboratory needs across the course lifecycle. Assist with syllabus development, scheduling, and integration of guest speakers and field/lab components. Maintain detailed planning documents and timelines to ensure seamless course execution. Instructional & Student Support Provide academic support during lectures, labs, and fieldwork. Collaborate with instructors to prepare and distribute teaching materials. Serve as a technical and academic resource for students during lab activities. Co-instruct or facilitate lab components as needed, including demonstrations, safety briefings, and technical troubleshooting. Lab and Technical Operations Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and specimens required for course modules. Coordinate with technical staff and vendors for equipment calibration, maintenance, or procurement. Ensure compliance with all safety and biosafety protocols during lab activities. Faculty Engagement Support visiting faculty and instructors by managing their instructional logistics and materials. Anticipate faculty needs in advance, ensuring seamless transitions between sessions and technical setup. Documentation and Reporting Collect and manage course evaluations, feedback, and data for assessment. Contribute to annual course reports, inventory updates, and process improvements. Qualifications: Required: Advanced degree in Biology, Life Sciences, or a related field is preferred, or 5 years experience in lab management in an academic or similar environment. Strong technical aptitude, including familiarity with laboratory instruments, advanced imaging, microinjection technologies and standard molecular/biochemistry techniques. At least 5 years of laboratory experience, including sample preparation, experimental setup, or data analysis. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, researchers, and students. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to anticipate needs and act proactively. Preferred: Experience in teaching, mentoring, or co-instructing within academic or research environments. Previous experience supporting higher education courses, summer institutes, or field schools. Familiarity with course management systems (e.g., Canvas, Microsoft Office Suite, and scheduling software).
