College Laboratory Technician

Performs highly-skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework. Sets up, maintains, and organizes student laboratories. Assists students with setting up experiments and other learning exercises, and with the use of equipment and materials. Maintains appropriate safety and hygiene standards. Maintains required documentation related to laboratory activities. Manages equipment and materials inventories. Reporting to the Chair of the Computer Systems Technology Department, the duties of the College Laboratory Technician will include, but not be limited to: networking, server support, and troubleshooting to assist classroom, laboratory, and departmental activities. Conversion and migration of computers and servers, network design, web design, virtualization, and cloud. Administer Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) utilizing various operating systems (Linux, Windows Server, Windows 7-11 and others). Programming and database support, and system database management. Determining departmental equipment requirements, preparing purchase specifications and coordinating acquisitions. Preparation and reconciliation of purchase requisitions in the CUNYfirst procurement system. Where appropriate, training and supervising adjunct college laboratory technicians and other laboratory staff. Related duties as assigned. Minimum qualifications: High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience. Other qualifications: The candidate shall have knowledge and skills related to the discipline and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff. Preferred qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science or a related field is strongly preferred. Previous experience as a laboratory technician in a college or professional setting. Experience with conversion and migration of computers and servers; network design; web design; virtualization; and cloud computing. Familiarity with VDI as well as additional operating systems, including but not limited to: Linux, Windows Server, Windows, etc. Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Strength in collaborating within a team of faculty and staff, up to and including the executive leadership level. Compensation: $57,524 - $66,070. Salary commensurate with education and experience. CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
