Williamson County Animal Health Technician
Williamson County is seeking an Animal Health Technician. The position is full-time, located in Georgetown, TX, with a salary of $48,172.29 annually. The department is Animal Services, and the job number is 14.03049. Job Summary
Reporting directly to the Animal Health Supervisor, the technician is responsible for providing paraprofessional health care to animals within the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter by administering medical care to the animals, serving as lead to Animal Health Technicians, and supporting the Animal Care and Animal Behavior teams. Examples of Work Performed
The technician will: Provide health care to all shelter animals including vaccinating, de-worming, weighing, photographing, performing diagnostic tests, administering medications, performing euthanasia, monitoring rabies quarantine animals, and assisting the veterinarian with surgical procedures. Lead, train, and provide feedback on daily tasks of Animal Health Technicians, Volunteers, and Community Service workers. Log medications, including controlled substances, in required logs and records. Perform venipuncture and place intravenous catheters. Assist with delegation and monitoring of Animal Health Technician tasks, and provide disciplinary actions under the guidance of the Animal Health Supervisor. Perform diagnostic testing to include, but not limited to, fecal testing and various in-house blood tests. Collect blood, urine, fecal, and skin samples. Assist the veterinarian with examinations and medical procedures, including spay/neuter surgeries, microchipping, and performs medical treatments as directed. Perform radiographs at the shelter, with proficiency in correct positioning, based on protocols written by shelter veterinarian. Prepare animals for surgery, administer medication, and monitor animal vitals through the surgery and recovery process, and sanitize surgical instruments. Communicate post-surgery and medical instructions to fosters and new adopters. Counsel fosters/adopters on medical treatments or medical needs of shelter animals. Clean and sanitize the surgery room, recovery kennels, and tech rooms. Utilize shelter software to maintain information about animals, including medical histories. Assist with emergency procedures such as CPR, IV catheter placement, and drug administration, and placement of endotracheal tubes under supervision of shelter veterinarian. Determine disposition on all animals, handle fractious animals, and assign handling difficulty levels based on behavior and medical conditions. Monitor animal vitals through the surgery and recovery process, and provide post-op care, such as wound cleaning and bandaging. Assist the Animal Health Supervisor with ensuring shelter compliance with state laws regarding animal shelters and bite quarantine. Oversee the overall movement of animals within the shelter. Assist Animal Health Supervisor and Veterinarian in coordinating microchip, vaccination, and community cat spay/neuter clinics offered to the public. Identify animals that are candidates for outside rescue organizations or foster care. Make on-site medical decisions in the absence of the Animal Health Supervisor. Transport animals to other facilities as needed. Monitor and maintain the tech email, determining which medical protocol to follow when symptoms or incidents are reported, including determining how urgent the medical issue may be and the best course of action to take. Follow all safety measures and policies, including proper animal restraints and reading animal behavioral cues, and promptly report any safety incidents to leadership. Perform clerical and customer service duties related to the intake and processing of animals for impoundment, adoption, and redemption. Assist in determining which animals may need outside vet care. Ensure building security upon opening and closing and maintain accurate inventory of medical supplies, re-stocking as necessary. Oversee and train volunteers and interns as needed. Position requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine motor coordination. Position involves lifting and carrying of animals and equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, or up to one hundred (100) pounds with assistance, and exertion of up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force to move objects. Position involves hearing and/or seeing alert cues regarding animal and staff security. Position involves maintaining composure in a high-stress environment. Environmental Factors
Work is primarily indoors in an air-conditioned environment. May work outside in inclement weather. Frequent handling of animals, including contact with waste and blood. Exposure to unpleasant smells and a noisy and wet environment associated with a shelter. Exposure to gas anesthetics. Frequent exposure to animals that are agitated or injured that may attempt to bite or scratch. Position involves working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. Position involves working with distressed individuals. Irregular Hours: Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement. Essential personnel for emergency situations; discretion of department director. Regular attendance is required. High school diploma or equivalent. Licensed Veterinary Technician/Certified Vet Assistant AND one (1) year of experience as a veterinary technician/assistant in a shelter/animal hospital setting; OR two (2) years of veterinary technician experience. One (1) year of demonstrated lead or supervisory experience. Knowledge of animal health and well-being, including nutritional needs, common animal diseases and behavioral issues, proper and safe handling and restraints, caring for sick/injured/fractious animals, and pharmaceuticals commonly used in treatment of animal conditions. Prior experience identifying signs and symptoms of animal illnesses, injuries, and behavioral issues, drawing blood from animals, performing injections, administering medications, and performing basic veterinary testing procedures. Demonstrated customer service and professional communication skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, computers, phone/iPad software, and applications such as instant messaging (IM), email, FaceTime, PetPoint, etc. Valid drivers license required within thirty (30) days of employment. Euthanasia certificate required within 120 days (4 months) of employment. Preferred Qualifications
