Lse Inclusion Counselor
Town Of Apex invites applications for the position of: Lse Inclusion Counselor About This Position Expected Hiring Range: $17.00 - 18.00/hr Work Location: 53 Hunter Street, Apex, NC 27502 Schedule: Up to 20 hours per week, between 8am and 5pm Posting Closing Date: Until Filled What You Will Be Doing The Inclusion Counselor is responsible for providing additional support to campers with disabilities (ages 5-12) during Track-Out Camps, Summer Camps, and Specialty Camps. This role will focus on ensuring campers with disabilities have a positive and inclusive experience by offering tailored accommodations, lowering the camper-to-staff ratio, and providing individualized support to help them thrive in the camp environment. Support Multiple Sites: Camps occur at several different sites: the Community Center, Cultural Arts Center, and Athletic Fields. This position may require you to travel between camp locations to assist with certain camps as needed. It is expected that the majority of this position's duties will take place at the Community Center. Camp Counselor Duties: Attend off-site field trips, lead games, and facilitate other camp activities alongside other camp counselors. Provide Director Support: Work with campers who have disabilities, offering extra support and supervision as needed. Lower Camper-to-Staff Ratio: Adjust the camper-to-staff ratio for specific activities or group settings to ensure that campers with disabilities receive the attention they need to engage fully in the camp experience. Behavior Management: Assist in implementing behavior management strategies tailored to each camper's needs, promoting positive behavior and addressing challenges as they arise. Provide Accommodations: Modify camp activities and environments as necessary to ensure that all campers can fully participate, based on their individual needs and abilities. This may include adapting physical activities, ensuring accessibility, or providing sensory accommodations. Collaboration with Camp Staff: Work closely with other counselors, program staff, and the Camp Directors to create a supportive, inclusive environment for all campers. Share observations and insights about campers needed to ensure that everyone is included. Promote Inclusion: Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment where all campers feel valued and respected, encouraging interaction between campers with and without disabilities. Monitor Camper Progress: Track and report on the progress of campers with disabilities, identifying areas where additional support may be needed. Provide feedback and suggestions for improving inclusion strategies. Ensure Safety and Well-being: Maintain a safe and supportive environment by following all safety protocols, supervising campers at all times, and addressing any physical or emotional concerns promptly. Attend Training: Participate in pre-camp training sessions and professional development to stay informed about best practices for working with campers with disabilities. What You'll Need Experience working with children, preferably in a camp, educational, or recreational setting. Knowledge or experience in working with children with disabilities, including autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, or other developmental or physical disabilities. Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team. Patience, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to the varying needs of campers. Positive, encouraging, and energetic demeanor. Must bring enthusiasm to the camp experience to create a fun and supportive environment. Ability to model and promote positive behavior and social interaction. First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain during training week) Coursework or a degree in special education, psychology, social work, or related fields is preferred. Experience in behavior management and implementing accommodations for children with disabilities is a plus.
