Description Under the direction of the Coordinator, Elementary Mathematics, the Mathematics Coach promotes access and equity for all students by providing direct instructional support to teachers, designing and implementing comprehensive school-based professional development, and creating K-5 curriculum and assessment resources aligned to grade level standards. Minimum Qualifications Applicants must meet all the following qualifications, listed below, to be considered for the vacancy. Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Certification/Licensure: Priority will be given to applicable applicants who hold a current Professional Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certificate/license with an elementary education endorsement. Applicants may be considered who hold a current Professional MSDE certificate/license and have completed all MSDE requirements for the elementary education endorsement/license at the time of application. Hold a current out-of-state educator certificate/license and are eligible for a Professional Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) elementary education license, at the time of application. Experience: Three (3) years of experience teaching mathematics in a K-5 setting. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree from an accredited college or university in elementary education, special education, curriculum and instruction, administration and supervision, or a closely related field. Experience teaching mathematics in both primary and intermediate elementary grades. Experience designing and delivering professional learning opportunities. One (1) year of leadership duties, responsibilities, experience, and/or roles. Essential Position Responsibilities The below list is a summary of the functions of the job, not an exhaustive or comprehensive list of all possible job responsibilities, tasks, and duties. Provides direct support to mathematics teachers aligned with the Strategic Call to Action through the strategic use of best practices, planning, data gathering, reflection processes, and coaching skills/tools. Plans and facilitates professional learning focused on mathematics content and pedagogy to support elementary mathematics teachers and other instructional staff in designated schools. Facilitates collaborative planning in the development of rigorous lessons and assessments aligned to the K-5 Maryland College and Career Ready Standards for Mathematics. Works collaboratively with school-based administration, mathematics specialists, ESOL, special education, Title I, and classroom teachers to design mathematics improvement goals for students and teachers, which support the overall School Improvement Plan. Supports collaborative data discussions using protocols that improve classroom instruction, support the alignment of resources for students, and focus on student feedback that results in student action. Facilitates the effective use of processes and structures designed to ensure that every student has access to rigorous mathematics programming. Works as a mathematics advocate for students, families, and community members to create a partnership of understanding of mathematics expectations, instructional strategies, and student dispositions that support expectations for curriculum and assessment. Provides direct support to non-tenured teachers through instructional mentoring. Assists in developing curriculum and professional learning resources to support the HCPSS Elementary Mathematics program. Provides professional learning and outreach to support the HCPSS Elementary Mathematics program in all schools. Engages in professional growth opportunities to improve and enhance mathematics and numeracy knowledge for teaching, knowledge of pedagogy, and effective leadership. Supports family involvement initiatives at the school level. Selection Criteria Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be included in further evaluation. Employment Information Compensation: This is a 10-month per year position in the Howard County Educators Association (HCEA) employee bargaining unit. The current salary range for this position is on the 10-Month Teacher Salary Scale. Actual placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Howard County Public School System and the HCEA Master Agreement which considers relevant prior experience. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is exempt from overtime. Retirement: Membership in the Maryland State Retirement Agency (MSRA) pension plan is a mandatory condition of employment for all employees who meet the eligibility and membership criteria defined in the State Personnel and Pensions Article and the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR). A qualifying employee cannot reject membership, nor can an ineligible employee elect membership. The annual contribution to the pension plan will be 7% of an employee's annual salary. All employees, regular and temporary, must be fingerprinted, have a criminal background investigation completed, and successfully complete the Maryland Employment History Review, pursuant to Section 6-113.2 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland. In addition, some positions will require completion of a physical examination and/or drug testing.
