Plan Checker Or Plans Examiner

The City of Visalia Building Safety Division is recruiting for Plan Checker or Plans Examiner (depending on qualifications). Please review the recruitment announcement. The Building Safety Division, within the City of Visalia's Engineering & Building Department, serves the community by providing a wide range of building services covering residential, commercial, and industrial projects. The Division is responsible for plan review, permit processing, and inspection. The Division's staff is committed to providing high-quality support and services to other City Departments and the Public. Examples Of Duties

This position will perform routine to complex plans examination of industrial, commercial, and residential buildings and may perform onsite field reviews to verify the plans and specifications submitted. The selected candidate will maintain records and prepare appropriate paperwork, correspondence, and reports and may also issue building permits. Qualifications / Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess a high level of professionalism; be certified through ICC as a Residential and/or Commercial Plans Examiner; have knowledge of construction trades, engineering, construction management principles; and possess strong customer service skills. The position requires excellent judgement, integrity, and organizational skills. The ideal candidate will be a self-driven individual, willing to take on new challenges, be able to effectively communicate with coworkers, supervisors, support staff, and be willing to work on multiple projects at any given time. Experience in areas such as building permit plan check, construction management, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, and California Building Code (CBC) compliance is highly desirable. Knowledge in municipal work such as state and federal regulatory compliance, and implementation of local government policy and procedures is highly desirable. Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill, and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill, and abilities would be: Plan Checker: One year of permit intake, drafting, building inspection, and/or building plan checking experience. College-level courses in electrical, civil or structural engineering. Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering or related field is preferred. ICC Residential Plans Examiner Certification within one year of appointment. Plans Examiner: College level courses in electrical, civil or structural engineering. Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience performing building plan check for commercial and residential projects. ICC Certification as a Residential Plans Examiner by time of appointment. ICC Certification as a Commercial Plans Examiner within one year of appointment. ICC certifications in Fire Inspections and Accessibility Plans Examiner (or CASp) are desirable. Possession of a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment. Additional Information
