Staff NPI Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Magic Leap is a pioneer in spatial computing, developing groundbreaking augmented reality technology that seamlessly blends digital content with the real world. As the creator of the next computing platform, our mixed reality devices unlock new possibilities for how people interact with and experience their surroundings. Magic Leap could be your place if you want to be part of a united team where everyone is empowered and trusted to make an impact. At Magic Leap, you can explore innovative solutions and use your talents to solve real-world problems. Working alongside industry experts, you can grow your skills and amplify human potential at the intersection of the physical and digital worlds. We know that successful change and progress accelerate diverse perspectives. As we shape our future, everyone's voice matters. Together, we can reimagine the world of work and, with our bold partners, make the impossible possible. As a Staff NPI Opto-Mechanical Engineer within our Manufacturing team, you will be responsible for identifying critical requirements, understanding system sensitivities, developing execution strategies and mapping out key performance metrics necessary to achieve product goals. This role will report into the New Product Introduction (NPI) team and will act as a strategic partner across NPI engineering, research, product design, supply chain, product management, and manufacturing teams to tackle some of our biggest technical challenges. Drive the transition of cutting-edge opto-mechanical designs from R&D prototypes into high-volume production. You'll own design for manufacturability, prototyping, test methods, custom tooling, automation development, vendor transfer, and ramp-to-volume of miniature optical subsystems for AR/MR devices. Location: Ideally, we'd like to hire in Plantation, Florida. For the right candidate, our team is open to considering a hybrid hire. Regardless, you will be required to travel up to 30% of the time to our HQ and/or Boulder, CO locations. What you'll do: Develop Manufacturing Processes

Design and implement innovative manufacturing solutions for emerging optical display technologies, from concept through execution. Drive Manufacturing Solutions

Develop, prototype, and optimize manufacturing processes, ensuring smooth transitions from new product introduction (NPI) to high-volume production. Vendor Evaluation & Integration

Assess and collaborate with vendors, contract manufacturers, and supply chain partners to ensure process capability, quality standards, and production readiness. Cross-Functional Collaboration

Partner with internal teams, including Opto-mechanical, Manufacturing, Test, and Optical Engineering, to integrate feedback, optimize cost and performance, define technology roadmaps and strategies, and establish key milestone criteria. Risk Management & Process Optimization

Conduct risk assessments (PFMEA), tradeoff analyses, and process experimentation to enhance manufacturing strategies and mitigate potential challenges. Manufacturing Tool & Process Qualification

Design and qualify manufacturing tools, fixtures, and assembly aides to enhance production efficiency and scalability. Product Readiness & Execution

Establish and refine product readiness strategies, execution processes, and transition requirements to achieve high-quality, high-yield manufacturing. Data-Driven Design Feedback

Leverage production data, benchmarks, and performance analyses to inform design improvements and optimize cost, quality, and manufacturing efficiency. The experience you bring: 7+ years' hands-on experience in opto-mechanical design, prototype build, and NPI/manufacturing engineering Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related field Proven track record developing automation equipment, custom tooling, and robot-assisted assembly solutions Experience in specification and assembly of automation equipment Experience in PLC and IPC code languages Proficient in 3D CAD (Creo or SolidWorks) and GD&T practices Strong background in optical alignment, kinematic constraints, and tolerance analysis Experience with metrology tools (CMM, confocal microscopes, interferometers) Demonstrated success transitioning designs into high-volume manufacturing Skilled in statistical analysis tools (JMP, MATLAB) and DFMA principles Excellent cross-discipline communication and project-management skills It's exciting if you also have: 10+ years of NPI/manufacturing experience in consumer electronics, optical systems, or AR/VR MS in Mechanical, Opto-mechanical, or Robotics Engineering Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, or DFSS methodologies Experience with machine vision, vision-guided alignment, and automated inspection systems Background in color science, image-quality metrics, or digital image processing Hands-on in clean-room environments and traditional machine tools (mills, lathes) Scripting skills (Python, C#, MATLAB) for data analysis or equipment control Knowledge of fabrication and assembly processes, including testing and quality methods Additional Requirements: Flexibility for travel as needed (approximately 10-20%) Additional Information: All your information will be kept confidential according to Equal Employment Opportunities guidelines.
