Transit Bus Driver Opportunity

University Transit Service (UTS) is seeking students to become transit bus drivers. The driver will work within UTS to provide transportation services to the University of Virginia community. Duties include operation of a transit unit on a fixed route as well as transit operation in support of University-wide events. An ideal candidate would be reliable at work, comfortable interacting with the public, and eager to learn how to safely operate a 35' transit bus. An interest in transportation, urban planning, or sustainability is a plus but not required. UTS offers a unique opportunity to gain new skills, learn about transit operations, and join a community of other passionate individuals. UTS buses are on the road from 5:00 AM to 3:00 AM the next day, so hours, including training, are highly flexible around class schedule. With over 100 drivers, trading and swapping shifts is quite easy. Summer hours are available. Job commitments include: Training to earn a Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within the first semester of employment A minimum of 12 work hours per week Availability during exams and major University events including football games, basketball games, and final exercises, unless the student is graduating Must be able to pass a pre-employment DOT Physical including bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, or crouching, Drug Screen, and obtain at least a 1-year DOT Certification. Position compensation: $23.25/hr. Minimum requirements: Education: Current UVA undergraduate student Experience: None Licensure: Driver's license for at least one year with good driving record and no reckless driving or DUI convictions Physical demands: Safe operation of a transit bus requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling (steering wheel and various controls), repetitive motion, use of both hands, use of either hand, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement. Safe operation also includes repetitive motion with both ankles/feet, with both possessing the strength and dexterity to fully depress the service brake and accelerator (right), and turn signal controls (left) present on the transit bus units within the Parking and Transportation fleet. Boarding/alighting the transit bus requires the ability to climb stairs (at least one step up/down). Successful operation of ADA Accessible equipment aboard the transit bus requires bending, lifting, and carrying. All of these physical requirements should be considered essential to the position. Work performed during special events and as part of servicing the equipment requires standing, walking, and the potential for bending, lifting, and carrying.
