Job Description:

Necropsy Technician Level 2 and 3

Necropsy Technician Level 2 The necropsy technician 2 performs the daily tasks and responsibilities associated with the maintenance and functionality of the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory's (LADDL's) necropsy laboratory and cremation and carcass disposal services. Also, responsible for participation in necropsy teaching activities and managing the pathology laboratory. The incumbents must be prepared to handle carcasses and tissues of various animal species, including primates that may be infected with various infectious agents and zoonotic pathogens. Maintain the highest professional standards, promote excellent customer service to internal and external constituents, and commit to providing excellent diagnostic service to LADDL clients. In addition to a typical work schedule, may be scheduled to work weekends, work split shifts, overtime, and holidays, and attend training as necessary. Job Responsibilities: 40%- The incumbent will perform appropriate disposal of all animals submitted to the necropsy laboratory and tissues and laboratory animals from LSU Vet Med and LSU campus. This includes group incineration of small and large animals and private cremations. To process remains for private cremations and return fully documented ashes to LADDL receiving. Complete all documentation related to incineration and private cremation. Packaging and shipping of cremains. Coordination of cremations between LADDL and VTH. Cleaning, pressure washing, organizing, and maintenance of the necropsy laboratory, associated dock areas, and disposal areas. Disinfect the necropsy laboratory coolers according to LADDL SOPs. 20%- The incumbent will operate a forklift, band saw, steam cleaner, electric crane and hoist, and incinerator. Cleaning and maintenance of incinerators and record and report temperature records to LSU EHS. Ensure that the necropsy room is prepared for a necropsy with adequate routine supplies, fixatives (e.g., 10% buffered formalin), sharpened knives, and scissors. Storage, documentation, and disposal of saved tissues, whether fixed in formalin or frozen, from necropsy or SVM biopsies. Properly dispose of hazardous chemicals. 10. Responsible for cleaning the necropsy laboratory and supporting rooms and instruments. Operates forklift, band saw, steam cleaner, electric crane and hoist, and incinerator. 10%- The incumbent will demonstrate an extensive understanding of necropsy laboratory operations, AAVLD accreditation standards, LSU EHS biosafety guidelines, and OSHA laboratory regulations. Maintain and update SOPs and laboratory policies and participate in all annual inspections and NVSL proficiency testing. The incumbent must perform the supervisory functions of all necropsy technicians, including, but not limited to, employee scheduling, performance, appraisals, employee recognition, coaching, biosafety training, and disciplinary action. 10%- Perform cost analysis on consumables, reagents, antibodies, etc., as needed. The incumbent will demonstrate an extensive understanding of necropsy laboratory operations, AAVLD accreditation standards, LSU EHS biosafety guidelines, and OSHA laboratory regulations. Maintain and update SOPs and laboratory policies and participate in all annual inspections and NVSL proficiency testing. 10%- Receiving animals for necropsy and cremation at the loading dock and completing paperwork for all submissions. Must be able to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold up to 75 pounds unassisted and push/pull carts or forklifts containing up to 1000 pounds. Prepare animals for necropsy, including obtaining weights for animals >200 pounds. Alert the duty pathologist and resident(s) of any special requests or problems with the submitted animals. Maintain the highest professional standards, promote excellent customer service to internal and external constituents, and commit to providing excellent diagnostic pathology and cremation services to LADDL clients. 10%- Perform equipment/instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, maintain appropriate inventory of supplies, and maintain effective communication and working relationships with all laboratory personnel, other disciplines, and external customers. Perform other duties assigned by the pathologists, residents, pathology section head, laboratory supervisor, or the LADDL director. Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma and 2 years or more of experience working in a veterinary necropsy or human autopsy laboratory. Maintain and update SOPs and laboratory policies and participate in all annual inspections and NVSL proficiency testing. The incumbent must perform the supervisory functions of all necropsy technicians, including, but not limited to, employee scheduling, performance, appraisals, employee recognition, coaching, biosafety training, and disciplinary action. 10%- The incumbent will participate in the training and orientation of employees and anatomic pathology residents, including the promotion of LADDL's mission statement and values of quality client care, consistently demonstrate and follow proper laboratory protocols, and promote a professional environment within the laboratory, directly supervisors' staff daily, to ensure accuracy and efficiency, assists with daily troubleshooting problem resolution, and creates/updates laboratory procedure and protocol manuals. 5%- Act as a liaison to maintain communication between LADDL sections, researchers, pathologists, and the Director. Collaborate with Pathology Section Head and Histology/IHC Section-in-Charge to promote and expand laboratory services. Evaluate laboratory workflow for efficiency and make appropriate changes as needed. Work closely with the Director on client (i.e., researchers) issues to ensure a high level of service from the necropsy laboratory to advance the research mission of LSU Vet Med. 5%- Perform cost analysis on consumables, reagents, antibodies, etc., as needed. Order supplies and reagents, maintain the equipment service contracts, and maintain the laboratory inventory. Report any workplace accidents or injuries to the Quality Assurance Manager, Biosafety Officer, and EHS immediately. Complete monthly and quarterly Quality Metrics/Reports and participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement initiatives set out for the laboratory, as needed. 5%- Receiving animals for necropsy and cremation at the loading dock and completing paperwork for all submissions. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related field; and experience working in a veterinary necropsy or human autopsy laboratory, and experience working as an administrative coordinator, supervisory or managerial experience. Special and Physical Qualifications (ALL LEVELS) Necropsy Technician 2 OR 3: Vehicle Operation - University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.
