Position Purpose/Summary: Please note that this is a Civil Service position. This position is not currently open, should there become an opening we will hire off of the list of applicants starting with the oldest application date. Application for City of Springfield Labor Service. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of filing application. Incomplete applications will not be processed. The name of an applicant will remain on the Labor Service register for the job title which he or she is registered for a period of not more than 5 years from the date of registration, subject to a renewal of registration as provided in Section 28, Chapter 31 of the General Laws, and subject to compliance with other applicable provisions of the Civil Service law and rules. Responsible for the application of a high level of specialized skills and knowledge in the construction, maintenance, and repair of Streets and Engineering Department property. Work is performed under supervision of a foreman in accordance with accepted trade practices with review through inspections during process and upon completion for conformance to established departmental standards. Incumbents ordinarily specialize in a single trade, but not infrequently perform tasks which require skills in more than one trade. Supervision may be exercised over assigned helpers. Essential Functions

Constructs, alters, repairs structures, buildings, equipment, and articles made of wood and similar materials. Lays and repairs roofs. Operates woodworking machinery. Paints, decorates structures, buildings, and equipment, including spray painting, glazes doors and windows. Lays brick, stone, tile, or concrete blocks. Applies plaster and concrete. Performs other skilled tasks in constructing, altering, and repairing masonry and related structures. Installs, alters, repairs, and maintains plumbing and equipment, including pipe fences, not requiring a licensed plumber. Fabricates, paints, stencils, repairs street name, traffic, and other similar signs. Repairs, maintains, and operates the municipal asphalt plant. Fabricates, maintains, and repairs articles and equipment made of canvas or leather; upholsters furniture. May supervise assigned helpers in less skilled aspects of work performed. May operate motor equipment of from light to moderate tonnage. Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, equipment processes, and techniques of the work performed. Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in work performed. Some knowledge of the fundamentals of a variety of skilled trades. Ability to work from written and oral instructions, sketches, and drawings. Ability to supervise the work of assigned helpers. Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials employed in the work performed. Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent, including or supplemented by training in a specialized trade. Minimum of three years of varied experience in the work performed. Benefits
