Marine Geoscientist

The Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire is seeking a Marine Geoscientist to support research surrounding seafloor characterization and marine mineral exploration. This position will focus on applying geospatial techniques to seafloor mapping and will leverage the candidate's experience with sub-bottom profiling systems, field surveys, and data processing. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research, particularly in advancing data processing methods for geological mapping and critical resource exploration. The role is supported by grant-funded projects and includes opportunities for teaching, publishing, and mentoring. Duties/Responsibilities Lead and support field-based research focused on identifying and mapping marine minerals and other critical resources throughout the U.S. extended continental shelf. Contribute to the testing and improvement of the BRESS system for streamlined surficial geology mapping. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to explore applications of mapping protocols to other marine mineral and biological resources. Geological Mapping Develop and refine protocols for generating high-resolution surficial geology maps using Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standards (CMECS). Sub-bottom Sonar Systems Participate in high-resolution acoustic surveys using multibeam echosounders (MBES) and sub-bottom profilers (SBP), integrated with ground-truthing techniques. Sedimentology and Bathymetric Data Analysis Analyze and interpret bathymetric, morphological, sedimentological, and seismic stratigraphic data from complex seafloors. Expand survey efforts to identify additional aggregate resource targets in complex seafloor environments. Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience: B.S. in Marine Geosciences, or a closely related field, and at least 7 years of related professional experience in marine geophysical surveying, data processing, and sediment analysis.
