The City of Cedar Rapids is seeking a dependable and safety-minded individual to join our Public Utilities Department as a Water Plant Maintenance Repair Worker I. This entry-level position plays a vital role in ensuring the continuous and efficient operation of the city's water treatment facilities by performing a variety of maintenance, repair, and equipment serving duties. About the Position Provides technical maintenance services to sustain a continuing program of water supply and distribution. Job Duties and Responsibilities Adjusts, maintains and repairs wells, pumping systems, centrifuges, filter valves and controls, lime slaking, recarbonation, chlorination, fluoridation and other chemical feed systems in a municipal water system; Performs carpentry, masonry, plumbing, welding, fence building, painting and minor maintenance and repair of automotive equipment; Repairs and maintains turbine, gates and other mechanical systems associated with the 5 in 1 dam facility; Operates dump truck, end loader, skid loader to haul debris, chemicals and other equipment; Performs general maintenance and janitorial work, plows snow, mows grass, replenishes chemical feed systems, unloads trucks and performs general building and grounds maintenance; Wears and properly uses safety equipment including personal protective, fall protection equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus and gas detection equipment; Responds to emergency situations to repair pumps, etc.; Attends training classes and seminars; Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices; Attends work regularly at the designated place and time; Supports continuous process improvement initiatives; Performs related work as required. Acceptable Experience and Training: Minimum of one year work experience in maintenance and repair of mechanical and hydraulic equipment or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work. Required Special Qualifications: Valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License (Class B) within 6 months of employment and valid Medical Examiners Certificate. State of Iowa certificate in water distribution or water operations preferred. Work Schedule: Second shift hours of 2pm-12:30am and on call once every 9 weeks from Friday 11:30 pm to Monday 7:00 am. The Water Plant Maintenance Repair Worker I is covered under the AFSCME Bargaining Union, and all new hires begin employment at $24.63 per hour, regardless of years of experience.
