Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for the part-time position of Circulation Support Staff for the Northside Library who are highly motivated and who support JMRL's Mission Statement to foster personal growth and life-long learning for all by connecting people with ideas, information, and each other. The preferred starting salary is $15.75 an hour. This is a part-time 25 hour per week, non-exempt, position and is eligible for prorated benefits. This position performs responsible work at the Northside Library Circulation Desk, under the general supervision of the Circulation Manager or Circulation Support Supervisor, depending on assigned branch. Duties may vary based on assigned branch: Provides all library circulation services, including checking circulating materials in and out and assessing materials for damage or missing parts. Explains and enforces library policies and procedures. Registers patrons for library cards. Handles patron inquiries, both in person and on the telephone. Processes holds for pick up in branch or for other service locations. Sorts, shelves, and shifts library materials. May assist patrons with other routine library services such as faxing, printing, copying and computer needs. Collects library fines and fees for damaged items, replacement costs and overdue items. Maintains and balances cash register, counts drawer at closing and resets register at opening. Follows library procedures for opening, operating, and closing library branch. May assume responsibility for department/library in absence of supervisor/manager. Checks in magazines and newspapers and ensures they are in correct place in library. May be asked to process interlibrary loans; research patron requests, contact potential lending libraries, and process incoming and return loans. Flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends. Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time. Regular and reliable attendance. Other Duties: Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education. High School or GED and previous experience working in a public customer service environment and working with Windows. OR Previous experience working in a public customer service environment and working with Windows. OR An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above. Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements: Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check. Requires a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics: Job Knowledge: Knowledge and ability to apply, explain and enforce library policies and procedures. Knowledge of computer hardware. Knowledge of Dewey Decimal system. Reading: Intermediate: ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers, magazines, journals, multi-step instruction manuals, and reference materials. Writing: Basic: ability to write simple letters, paragraphs and sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses. Math: Basic: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Ability to perform functions associated with the receipt of funds, including record keeping and preparing money for deposit. Communication Skills: Routine: Examples include regular and routine interaction involving providing or exchanging information. Independence and Decision-Making: Requires General Direction: normally performs the job by following general instructions or established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is some discretion when making decisions among a few easily identifiable choices of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance is reviewed frequently. Technical Skills: Basic: uses standard technical skills appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities. Fiscal Responsibilities: Receives and disburses funds and prepares money for deposit. Supervisory Responsibilities: No responsibility for direction or supervision of others. Other Characteristics: Strong public service orientation. Performs tedious or exacting work. Constant interruptions and requests for service. May require dealing with angry, frustrated and/or upset individuals. Frequent change of tasks. Working closely with others as part of a team. Requires a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends. Physical Demands: Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Work requires pushing/pulling, standing for extended periods, stooping, bending, and carrying. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software and Hardware: Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone, and related software and hardware; book trucks and carts, and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned. Work Environment: Work is performed in office environment where there may be exposure to computer screen for extended periods of time, monitor glare and dust.
