Community Service Officer

Performs a wide variety of entry-level, limited-commissioned duties within the Police Department. Under general supervision and at the direction of the Chief of Police or designee(s). The Olympia Police Department's Community Service Officer (CSO) program is comprised of non-commissioned and limited-commissioned personnel performing a wide variety of duties within the police department. This program is a support function in collaboration between local peace officers, the municipal court, contract jail facilities, and the community. CSOs will respond to non-criminal calls for service as well as provide education, public safety, transportation, and outreach services that do not require the full authority of a peace officer. The Olympia Police Department is an actively engaged full-service law enforcement agency providing a wide range of law enforcement and social services to the community of Olympia. The CSO I classification is an un-armed position. Essential Functions:

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: Transports inmates to correctional facilities, court appearances, psychological and/or court-ordered activities, medical appointments and other destinations. Applies physical force within policy when required, as necessary. Maintains the care, custody and control of individuals being transported. Drives a department vehicle to transport individuals that have been detained/arrested by department personnel. Performs physical searches of individuals and transport vehicle for contraband and seizes such as evidence. Transporting evidence items to and from department facilities while maintaining proper chain of custody. May be required to exercise discretion and use independent judgement; often facing critical, potentially violent and complex situations. Processes individuals into Federal, State, County, Municipal and Tribal detention facilities to include completion of necessary documentation. Transfers bail/bond funds and documentation from corrections facilities to courts. Collects DNA samples as required. Ensures all fingerprints and identifying information is provided to courts. Takes individuals into custody and ordered by the court. Assists during Olympia Municipal Court matters at corrections facilities. Testifies in court regarding job-relevant incidents. Responds to traffic-related calls for service. Assists the Patrol Division with traffic control at special events and collision scenes. Provides collision scene management as requested and per department policies and procedures. Responds to calls for service related to lost and found property. Assists the Community Policing Division with traffic control, special events and other department-related activities. Operates and maintains job-related equipment. Maintains and organizes inventory of patrol vehicles. Provides administrative assistance to all department divisions/staff as requested. Assists stranded motorists. Prepares and completes detailed reports, forms, logs and other required documentations. Fingerprints incarcerated individuals using electronic fingerprinting equipment. Enters and/or verifies information into State-wide criminal database. Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance. Typical Qualifications:

1. Ability to work independently from general guidelines and broad program objectives. 2. Perform responsible and complex technical work using independent judgment, initiative and discretion. 3. Learn, apply, accurately interpret and explain complex laws, regulations, ordinances, policies and procedures. 4. Analyze complex issues and make accurate decisions independently. 5. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 6. Operate modern office equipment, machines, computers, and software at a level of proficiency required for the position. 7. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local policies and regulations. 8. Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive and/or confidential information. 9. Effectively prioritize and organize multiple assigned tasks to individuals and work groups, meeting strict timelines and accuracy requirements. 10. Present a positive professional image to the general public and other City Departments and provide customer service consistent with City and Department values. 11. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse populations, co-workers, and other agencies; work cooperatively with others as a service-oriented team member. 12. Ability to prepare and present clear, concise, and comprehensive reports. 13. Ability to speak to groups and make presentations. 14. Ability to communicate technical and operational concepts to varied audiences. 15. Ability to resolve conflict. Experience/Education:

1. Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. 2. Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED. Special Requirements:

1. Valid Washington State driver's license may be required. 2. Successful completion of a criminal background investigation, traffic background investigation. 3. Successful completion of psychological testing and polygraph examination. 4. Successful completion of drug and alcohol screening. 5. Successful completion of a 6-month probationary period for continued employment. 6. Ability to successfully complete the following Physical Ability Standards exam: Pushup Test 90 seconds to complete a minimum of 15 pushups to pass Followed by a three-minute rest period Sit Up Test 90 seconds to complete a minimum of 12 sit ups to pass Followed by a five-minute rest period Squat Thrust Test 3 minutes to complete a minimum of 25 squat thrusts to pass Union: Teamsters Compensation (minimum-maximum): $48,889.62 - $59,436.30 Exempt: No For general application or position questions please contact the hiring supervisor or Human Resources at
