Animal Control Officer

City of Forrest City, AR $11.25 Hourly Forrest City, AR Full-Time Police Continuous General Description Of Position: Performs routine and complex public safety work in the enforcement of animal control ordinances. Essential Duties And Responsibilities: Patrol streets to locate stray animals and promptly capture animals and transport them to the animal shelter. Respond to complaints concerning animal problems or violations of animal control ordinance, including but not limited to animals running at large, dog bites, property damage, or injuries. Remove dead, injured, or dangerous animals from the streets. Care for, feed, and house animals at the animal shelter. Provide maintenance and upkeep for the animal shelter. Investigate violations of animal control ordinances and issue warnings or citations as required. Appear in court to testify regarding animal control cases. Serve various criminal or civil notices or papers related to enforcement of animal control ordinances. Work an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action and will be expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance. Maintain normal availability by radio or telephone. Operate a light-duty truck to patrol assigned areas in the performance of essential job functions. Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of employment and must have no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education And Experience: High school or GED Communication Skills: Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, ordinance, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Critical Thinking Skills: Ability to utilize common sense understanding to carry out written, oral, and/or diagrammed instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several known variables in situations of a routine nature. Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver's License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position. Must be available to work nights, holidays, and weekends as required. Decision Making: Performs work operations that permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance and which would not only affect the operating efficiency of the individual involved but would also affect the work operations of other employees and/or clientele to a slight degree. Public Contact: Occasional routine contacts with persons outside the organization. Employee Contact: Contacts of considerable importance within the department or office, such as those required in coordination of effort, or frequent contacts with other departments or offices, generally in the normal course of performing duties. Requires tact in discussing problems and presenting data and making recommendations, but responsibility for action and decision reverts to others. Environmental Conditions: While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles; and frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Physical Activities: While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear; frequently required to reach with hands and arms, and occasionally required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
