Nuclear Engineer Opportunity
You will perform assigned portions of a major overhaul project under the cognizance of a senior graded Nuclear Engineer. You will analyze, evaluate, and resolve conflicting, confusing or inadequate operational design specification requirements. You will prepare engineering instructions for the overhaul and repair of nuclear reactor plant piping systems and mechanical components. You will identify material requirements, quality levels, and inspection requirements. You will prepare off-station correspondence such as change requests, trouble records or liaison action requests. You are eligible for this training opportunity if you are currently a permanent GS-0802-12, Engineering Technician in Code 2300 and meet the education requirements described below. Please note: appropriate documentation must be provided at time of application to support experience or educational requirements. Upon successful completion of this training opportunity, you will be eligible to compete for Nuclear Engineer, GS-0840-12 positions. Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: statics, dynamics; strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); fluid mechanics, hydraulics; thermodynamics; electrical fields and circuits; nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. To comply with the recent preliminary nationwide injunction on Executive Order 14043, Requiring Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination for Federal Employees, the Department of the Navy is not taking any action to implement or enforce the COVID-19 vaccination requirement. New hires will need to provide their vaccination status as well as comply with workplace safety protocols related to masking, physical distancing, testing, travel, and quarantine.
