Stratolaunch
Aerodynamics Engineer Lead
Stratolaunch is a technology accelerator that engineers operationally realistic testing at Mach 5+. Our air-launched, Talon testbeds are reusable, cost-effective platforms that enable routine access to the hypersonic environment. We deliver flight data critical to validating system performance and achieving rapid technology deployment. Together with our customers, we drive innovations that are imperative to advancing national security. To help achieve these efforts, Stratolaunch is seeking a Staff or Principal-level Aerodynamics Engineer to lead the conceptual design and aerodynamic analyses of air-launched, hypersonic flight vehicle development program. Candidates must have a strong aerodynamics background, preferably with experience in hypersonics. Experience with aerospace vehicle design and aerodynamic/performance analyses across the speed range from subsonic to hypersonic, is highly desired. Essential Responsibilities
Lead and support activities related to aerodynamic and aerothermal design, modeling, analysis, and test Lead and support activities related to aerodynamic and aerothermal configuration development for high-speed vehicles Frontline management of a small aerodynamics team Support the proposal and whitepaper development for the US Government and industry Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity, and fulfillment of commitments Qualifications & Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Required Qualifications: Expertise and experience with aerodynamic and aerothermal design, analysis, modeling and test across the supersonic and hypersonic flow regimes Working knowledge of aerodynamic design, analysis, modeling and test across the subsonic and hypersonic flow regimes Working knowledge of air-launched, high-speed vehicle configuration development and performance Experience with aerodynamic vehicle configuration development Experience planning and conducting wind tunnel tests Experience constructing aerodynamic models (nominal and uncertainty) for use in trajectory optimization tools and 6-DOF flight simulations Experience with flight test data collection and analysis Experience supporting safe separation analysis for air-launched vehicles Ability to work independently and task with program and business objectives Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities Ability to obtain a security clearance at the collateral Secret level Preferred Qualifications: Working knowledge of high-speed boundary layer transition physics Working knowledge and/or expertise in the area of non-equilibrium hypersonic flows Experience participating in flight test operations Experience interfacing with DOD test range personnel and store certification authorities Experience in a frontline manager role Experience supporting DOD development programs Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Active TS/SCI security clearance Required Computer Skills: Scripting languages (Python, Matlab, or similar) MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) Preferred Computer Skills: Experience with CFD analysis tools
preferred: US3D, Fun3D, Pointwise, Link3D, StarCCM, Kestrel Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software tools such as NX Experience with trajectory optimization analysis tools such as OTIS Configuration management systems such as JIRA, GIT, JAMA, etc. Education & Experience
