Job Summary
The City of Sandpoint is seeking talented individuals with specialized interests who want to share their expertise with others by teaching a recreational class. The primary function of an employee in this position is to organize and instruct various age groups in recreational classes or activities at one or more recreational facilities. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, although some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of the position are performed in an indoor gymnasium, community hall or other environment that may expose the employee to adverse weather conditions or excessive noise. Note: Recreation Instructors are paid $7.25/hour plus a percentage of class fees. Examples Of Duties
Instructs program participants orally and by demonstration in the fundamentals, rules, and techniques of a recreational specialty or several closely related specialties within one of the following major activity categories: Arts and Crafts
e.g., ceramics, sculpture, string and drawing arts, and paper and leather crafts; Performing Arts
e.g., drama, dance, music, and voice; Physical Activities
e.g., soccer, cheerleading, gymnastics, and swimming; Domestic Arts
e.g., cake decorating, cooking, baking, and sewing; Nature Activities
e.g., outdoor cooking, hiking, fishing, camping, and Native American crafts and lore; Table and Group Games
e.g., charades, card and party games, bridge, and chess; Adventure Recreation
e.g., archery, team-building, canoeing, and kayaking. Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed below: Plans, organizes, and promotes classes or clinics to be instructed or conducted. Supervises program participants and takes necessary steps to ensure that they adhere to standards of good conduct. Performs set up and tear down of any facilities or venues used for assigned program. Promotes a fun and positive environment for program activities. Determines safety of equipment and venue for assigned program. Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices. Performs other related duties as required. Core Competencies
Knowledge of: Teaching techniques and demonstration of skills or knowledge of assigned program activity. Facility/equipment set-up and tear-down procedures. Customer service principles and practices. Basic first aid and safety precautions in the performance of recreation activities. Ability to: Lead and participate in various recreation program activities. Work with participants, both youth and adults, in group or individual settings according to assigned program activity. Communicate effectively with the public, peers, class participants, and other City employees. Demonstrate effective customer service and interpersonal skills. Physical Demands Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person and on a telephone; Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and monitor participants; Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to teach and demonstrate skills for assigned program; Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and balance, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee run, jump, throw or perform skills in assigned program; and Jobs in this class require performing repetitive motions in fingering and hand/wrist/arm movements. Related job tasks may require, with or without reasonable accommodation, lifting or moving up to 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally, and stooping, bending, crouching and reaching. Any combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work. Special Qualifications First Aid/CPR certification is preferred. Satisfactory criminal background investigation for applicants 18 years of age or older.
