Research Assistant

The Research Assistant supports ongoing investigations into the molecular mechanisms of cardiometabolic and retinal diseases, bringing a strong foundation in laboratory research, with hands-on experience in both in-vivo and in-vitro models, including surgical techniques, molecular assays, and animal care. This position will contribute to impactful biomedical research while working in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. This position involves supporting experimental design, data collection and analysis, and maintaining laboratory operations. Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities): Sets up and operates various scientific laboratory equipment, tools and materials such as: incubators, microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuge, pH meter among others, and necessary office equipment. Prepares and maintains cell culture stocks, culture media, transgenic and wild type mice, reagents, and experimental animals; performs tissue culture experiments, performs immunoblotting assays, ELISAs. Participates in research projects and performs routine independent research. Plans, designs, and implements research projects; maintains animals; administers injections; prepares solutions; sterilizes equipment; etc. Records research procedures and results; compiles, files, and maintains good laboratory records, codes data for electronic input processing; inputs and retrieves data via computer terminals; analyzes, interprets and verifies data. Supervises, trains, and motivates lower student personnel. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Possess comprehensive knowledge of research laboratory operating policies, procedures and scientific methodology, including ability to operate and maintain research tools, instruments and equipment. Thorough knowledge of the use and preparation of culture media, chemicals, reagents, and the ability to perform a variety of laboratory procedures. Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly and concisely orally and in writing, including ability to analyze and extract data from conversation and documents for research projects. Ability to independently conduct research following established department guidelines. Strong supervisory skills and ability to effectively train and evaluate personnel on laboratory research methods and procedures. Strong interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally. Ability to operate PC software and other office technology. Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in a pertinent field of study from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 1 year's relevant experience using various cell and molecular biology approaches is required.
