CTE Media and Communications Teacher

CTE Director and Principal

Job Summary: The CTE Media and Communications Teacher will provide students with relevant, hands-on learning experiences in media production, journalism, broadcasting, digital content creation, and related fields. The teacher will deliver instruction aligned to state-approved CTE standards and industry expectations, helping students build skills necessary for post-secondary education and careers in media and communications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and deliver engaging lessons in areas such as digital media production, video editing, graphic design, journalism, photography, broadcasting, and social media content creation. Create a safe, inclusive, and project-based classroom environment that supports creativity, collaboration, and career-readiness. Integrate technology tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, Canva, podcasting equipment, and video/audio editing tools. Develop and implement lesson plans aligned to Michigan's CTE Media and Communication Technology curriculum standards. Facilitate student projects, portfolios, and possible participation in competitive events (e.g., SkillsUSA, BPA, student news broadcasts). Establish connections with local media outlets, businesses, and post-secondary institutions to support student learning and work-based learning experiences. Maintain accurate student records, complete required documentation for state-approved CTE programs, and participate in required CTE reporting. Participate in CTE program advisory committees and maintain ongoing professional development in industry and educational best practices. Manage classroom equipment, studio materials, and media labs to ensure proper usage and maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Industry experience and/or certification in media production, journalism, broadcasting, digital content creation, or related field. Strong technology and media skills, including proficiency in editing software, multimedia tools, and current media trends. Ability to connect with and motivate diverse learners. Effective communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Valid Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate with a CTE endorsement in Media and Communication Technology or ability to earn one under annual CTE authorization. Experience working in a high school setting or with youth in a media-based learning environment. Prior experience with CTE compliance, Perkins V reporting, and work-based learning coordination. Certification or coursework in education, instructional technology, or digital communications.

Terms of Employment:

Full-time, 10-month teaching position Salary per collective bargaining agreement

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with Board policy and Michigan Department of Education CTE guidelines.
