Supervisor Position at Houston Zoo
The Supervisor is responsible for supervision of zookeepers within the department including participation in daily husbandry, coordination of activities for individual keepers and keeper teams, exhibit maintenance, exhibit upkeep, coordination of animal shipments, participation in community education, media and conservation programs. This is achieved by assuring completion of weekly schedules, development of protocols, work in partnership with other departments, maintain species data, file reports, and train staff in all sections within the Carnivores department. Job Duties and Responsibilities: Supervises the selection, training, development, appraisal and work assignments of personnel Creates schedules assuring adequate coverage in all areas Participates in the hiring process cohesively with team curator Evaluates performance of zookeepers routinely to assist with growth Liaison with other zoos in regards to animal management Coordinates animal shipments Communicates with veterinary staff and develops best practices in animal husbandry Ensures regulations are followed within standards of USDA, OSHA and AZA Demonstrations strong team building and problem solving skills Participates in appropriate AZA/SSP meetings/communication Conducts tours through the department, as needed Communicates with maintenance staff on project management including completion and tracking of active work orders Assists with projects and initiatives Timecard maintenance and approvals within policy Ensures animal records and Tracks entries are accurate and up to date Orders supplies ensuring department stays within approved budget Creates, requests and ensures accuracy of signage Contributes to saving animals in the wild through: reduction of waste, water and energy use and inspiring guests and staff to take wildlife protecting actions Performs other duties as assigned Education and Experience: Fifth year college or university program certificate; or two to four years' equivalent combination of education and experience Ability to communicate with all levels of management Ability to work effectively and efficiently under minimal supervision About the Houston Zoo: The Houston Zoo is made up of many moving parts with over 6,000 permanent residents (our animals) for whom we provide housing, meals, medical care and, yes, even education!
