The University of Virginia's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for an adjunct faculty position for the Spring 2025 semester. This role involves teaching the World Building with Virtual and Augmented Reality course, an offering within the Civil and Environmental Engineering department open to students across engineering, architecture, and related disciplines. The course focuses on the intersection of technology, design, and engineering, providing students with hands-on experience in creating immersive virtual environments and augmented reality applications for real-world engineering and architectural challenges. UVA's Civil and Environmental Engineering program is nationally recognized for its leadership in cutting-edge research, excellence in teaching, and its impact on industry and society. The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative academic environment that values innovation and interdisciplinary approaches. The adjunct faculty position is part-time, non-tenure-track, without benefits ("faculty wage"), and renewable on a semester-by-semester basis. This position involves teaching an upper-level elective course. The specific focus of this position will include the development and delivery of a course in virtual/augmented reality that integrates 3D modeling as applied to engineering contexts, including infrastructure design, urban planning, environmental systems, and human factors. Responsibilities: Develop course materials that introduce students to the use of VR/AR technologies for engineering simulations, 3D modeling, and interactive system design. Teach a course in virtual and augmented reality with applications to civil and environmental engineering. Incorporate real-world scenarios into the course, allowing students to use state-of-the-art tools and technologies in practical, engineering-focused applications. Engage with students in hands-on projects and provide guidance on the integration of emerging technologies in professional engineering practices. Preferred Qualifications: Industry experience in using VR/AR tools for engineering design, human-computer interaction, or environmental systems modeling. Familiarity with software platforms such as Unity, Unreal Engine, Autodesk, 3ds Max, and/or Bentley Systems. A passion for teaching and a demonstrated ability to engage students in innovative and hands-on learning experiences. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: A master's degree or PhD in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Architecture, or a related engineering field is required. Experience: Demonstrated proficiency in virtual reality, augmented reality, game design, 3D modeling, and simulation tools commonly used in engineering contexts. Experience in developing and teaching courses related to VR/AR technologies, immersive environments, and their applications in civil or environmental engineering is encouraged. Licensure: None PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position requires presence in UVA's Charlottesville campus for in-person teaching and involves regular use of desktop computers and occasional travel for department meetings or events.
