As a Product Design Engineer, you will take a critical role in developing Systems for MR, AR, or New Technology Initiatives. You will become part of a team exploring developing concepts through prototyping and into mass-production consumer electronics. You will work as part of a cross functional team requiring collaboration and exploration in domains other than mechanical engineering. Our ideal candidate has mechanical engineering fundamentals, prototyping skills, CAD fluency, manufacturing process knowledge, and experience designing consumer electronics. Product Design Mechanical Engineer, Reality Labs Responsibilities Architect complex mechanical solutions that advance the state-of-the-art as part of multi-disciplinary team Model, build, test, and refine prototypes and characterization test systems Work across the full product development cycle, from concept inception to shipping product Leverage external teams (CM/JDM/Vendors) to maximize the focus of our internal resources on adding value and differentiation to our products Champion engineering quality and establish the design process, influencing the organization and leadership Travel to external vendors up to 20% Minimum Qualifications BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience 10+ years of product design and development experience of handheld and/or wearable electronics for high volume manufacturing, including full systems ownership Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning, geometric tolerancing, and 3D/2D CAD Working knowledge in material properties, such as plastics, metal, adhesive, glass, etc Testing and analysis experience (FEA, Simulation, Design of Experiments, etc) Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing techniques (stamping, machining, injection molding, etc) Preferred Qualifications Experience developing novel end-to-end system architectures spanning compute, displays/optics, EE, sensors, calibration, and firmware for new products from initial conception through prototyping, NPI, and production ramp. Experience providing product feedback in addition to technical feedback on engineering and design work. Experience working with partnerships teams and external partners at both a supply base and product level. MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field. Experience developing multiple novel consumer electronics products from a blank slate to functioning prototypes to shipping. Experience with architecture and systems engineering across systems including electrical, firmware, mechanical, and optical systems.
