Town of Acton, MA The Town of Acton is seeking applicants for the full-time, benefitted position of the Assistant Director of Public Works/Town Engineer. This position will report directly to the Director of Public Works. The position is responsible for managing projects and designing, and improving Acton’s infrastructure—including roads, sidewalks, bridges, stormwater systems, sewer lines, and traffic calming measures.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Director of Public Works, the Assistant Director of Public Works / Town Engineer is a senior-level, professional, and confidential position responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the Engineering Division while assisting with the overall administration and operations of the Department of Public Works (DPW). This includes Engineering, Highway, Administration, Transfer Station, Vehicle Maintenance, Trees & Grounds, Cemeteries & Parks, and related public infrastructure. The role ensures compliance with local, state, and federal standards, manages staff and consultants, supports budgeting and capital planning, and provides expert technical guidance.
Minimum Entrance Requirements
:
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a minimum of five (5) years of work experience in civil engineering and public works management with at least three (3) years of supervisory/managerial experience, including some exposure to project management, construction design, budgeting, and contract administration or equivalent combination of education and experience. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering and the materials, methods and techniques of public works construction.
Preferred Qualifications:
Work experience within a municipal public works environment. Soil evaluator license. Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in Massachusetts. Master’s degree in management.
Special Requirements:
Valid driver’s license. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Massachusetts required within one year of hiring. Massachusetts Certified Public Procurement Training within one (1) year or by the next available training period, whichever comes first. OSHA-10 and OSHA Excavation Competent Person Certifications or able to obtain within one (1) year or by the next available training period, whichever comes first.
Pay Rate
:
Range $104k to $136k depending on qualifications

Hybrid or Staggered work schedule is available after probationary period, up to a $425 fitness club reimbursement program (if enrolled in Town Health Insurance plan). Health, Dental, Vision and an attractive pension system are just some of our competitive insurance and benefits, with the town covering 75% of the Health insurance cost.
