Description
The Transportation Dispatcher works during route times and is responsible for supporting bus drivers.
Reports To: Transportation Supervisor
Monitor various communication platforms for the purpose of supporting the district bus drivers and the schools during route times.
bus garage phone: communicate with parents, emergency personnel, or others when conveying sensitive information that shouldn't be broadcast via radio
school radios: communicate directly with the schools without tying up the bus radios.
bus radio: communication between the drivers and the dispatcher
Communicate with the mechanic, transportation office, emergency personnel, or parents as needed in the event a bus is delayed (weather related, broken down, or in an accident).
Bring a new bus to a driver whose bus isn't functioning properly
Rule of thumb is bring a bus for anything that would cause the bus to fail a pretrip inspection.
Substitute for a route driver as needed
be comfortable with reading a driver's route sheet and driving the route
follow all state and district procedures relating to the safe and timely pickup, transportation, and discharge of passengers; including disabled riders
perform required pre-trip safety and maintenance checks on vehicle
maintain order and exercise discipline as necessary, and refer serious violations to the Transportation Supervisor
assume responsibility for the safety and care of children while in route
Ensure district vehicles going on a trip
a. have a full tank of fuel
b. have the driver trip sheet is in the vehicle
c. are cleaned off and ready to go (snowy weather)
File paperwork and give drivers their updated route sheets. Remove old route sheet copies from the file folder when adding a new version.
Make sure the trip board driver sheets are up-to-date
Work cooperatively with administration, staff, parents and the community
Comply with the absence policies of the District
Hours start 12 hour before the first route leaves for routes. Hours end after the last regular route driver returns to the bus garage. Deviations to the specified schedule must be approved by the supervisor.
Dispatcher hours are paid by actual hours worked. The 2 hour pay guarantee doesn't apply to this role. When driving a route if needed, the dispatcher would continue in the dispatcher role after driving, until the hours worked match the regular dispatcher hours (mid-day or otherwise).
Clock in/out using the bus garage time-clock.
Requirements of Essential Functions:
Constant (66-100%) sitting with reaching and stretching of arms and legs for door opening, operating controls, shifting gears, clutching and braking, along with alert watching and listening attentively for conditions affecting the bus or passengers.
Occasional (1-33%) daily opening of hood and climbing on bumper to check fluid levels, along with bending, pushing, pulling and lifting to clean interior of bus; and the standing, stooping, squatting to load, fasten and unload wheelchairs when necessary in order to perform essential job functions.
Lifting: 0-10 pounds frequently (34-66%)
11-50 pounds occasionally (1-33%)
Marginal Job Functions:
Keeps the office and breakroom area free of clutter
After driving a route: refuels if tank is 12 full or lower and cleans bus if needed
All other duties assigned which relate to the functions of the job
Qualifications
Job Qualifications:
Possess commercial driver's license with passenger and school bus endorsements
Ability to enforce state and district policies concerning safe bus behavior by students
Ability to work independently in a variety of weather and road conditions, as well as with large groups of children with varying noise levels
Must have good communication skills (oral and written) in order to work effectively with staff, students, parents and the community
