Salary Range: $105,000.00 To $125,000.00 Annually Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) seeks a creative and experienced leader to serve as its Chief Attorney for the Allegany/Garrett County office. The Chief Attorney will supervise, guide, and lead the office in providing high-quality legal services to low-income clients, as well as outreach and advocacy. This role involves supervising staff, mentoring, and participating in MLA’s organizational leadership, contributing to the legal department’s strategic direction. About MLA
Maryland Legal Aid advocates with and for Marylanders experiencing poverty to achieve equity and social justice through free civil legal services, community collaboration, and systemic change. Since 1911, MLA has worked to remedy civil legal issues and dismantle systemic barriers affecting underserved Marylanders. Responsibilities
Staff Supervision and Development
Provide leadership, guidance, and supervision to 9 staff members, including attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff, plus law clerks and volunteers. Guide professional development, review legal work, and evaluate staff performance and advocacy efforts. Conduct case reviews, assign cases per guidelines, and oversee administrative needs. Lead hiring efforts to attract committed staff and build a cohesive, communicative team. Ensure culturally responsive, client-centered legal assistance is delivered efficiently and compassionately. Encourage community outreach and education efforts. Identify staff training needs and ensure compliance with reporting obligations. Manage a limited caseload aligned with managerial duties. Strategy and Leadership
Participate in task forces and advocacy efforts at various levels. Develop community relationships and knowledge of available resources. Engage community leaders and build relationships with judiciary and private attorneys. Contribute to strategic planning, resource development, and compliance. Serve on the statewide management team to improve service quality. Assist with funding efforts, including identifying sources, making presentations, and drafting grants. Address client grievances as needed.
