Overview
The mission of the Department of Cellular,Molecular and Genetic Medicine falls into two important categories: Teachingand Research. We address important research problems and provide high qualityopportunities for our pre-and postdoctoral trainees. The department is theunderpinnings of modern biomedical science and our department provides thisbackground for all trainees at VCU, regardless of the direction the future maytake them.
Chief Purpose of this position:
The Department of Cellular, Molecular, and Genetic Medicine is hiring for a term faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to support its teaching and research mission. The faculty member will be responsible for directing and teaching core data science and quantitative genetic courses, in addition to supporting departmental training programs in genomic data science. Additionally, the faculty member will obtain grants to support their research, collaborate with other faculty, grow their research program at the university, publish their findings, and contribute to the scientific community through service.
Position Responsibilities:
Teaching: Responsibilities include serving as the director of the Fall semester offering of Data Science 1 (HGEN 611) and the Spring semester offering of Mathematical and Statistical Genetics (HGEN 603). Additionally, the faculty member will design a 1 credit Genomic Data Science journal club offered in the Spring semester (HGEN 610). These courses are generally team-taught, and the faculty member will be expected to contribute didactic lectures, substantially to HGEN 611 and as needed for HGEN 603. Development and continual innovation of lectures and course offerings is expected. Teaching is effort is estimated at no less than 50% effort.
Research: Development of a scholarly/research portfolio to complement existing expertise in the institute with evidence of multi-disciplinary collaborations. Research effort is estimated at 40%.
Service: Additional service requirements on Department, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field. Service effort is estimated at 10%.
Required Qualifications: PhD or equivalent in data science, with demonstratedexpertise in genomic data science, statistical genetics/genomics, andcomputational genetics/genomics. Clear research agenda with potential for external funding,and a demonstrated ability for scholarship or creative expression to complementand expand existing expertise. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications: Proven experience in teaching and/or mentoring at the graduate level.
