The Development & Communications Director (Dev/Comms) is responsible for managing and growing Rural Action’s donor base and ensuring consistent communications and outreach. In collaboration with the CEO, this person will lead and guide the vision for Rural Action’s development strategies and communications outreach. The Dev/Comms Director also has the broad responsibility of ensuring that Rural Action has and maintains a strong brand and works to increase brand alignment with Rural Action’s strategic goals. Additionally, Rural Action is currently in the Quiet Phase of a $6,000,000 Capital Campaign of which the Development & Communications Director will play a key role in. Essential Functions
Strategic Planning Build a workable and strategic plan to support growth in membership and development; Through implementation of the Benevon fundraising model, cultivate annual giving through donor development and growth; Lead and support training, growth, and engagement of the Donor Development Committee; Understand the monthly/quarterly/annual needs of the programs/enterprises and create the marketing/communications strategy for program outreach, events, and more. Development Ensure multi-year pledges are received and lead donor retention, gratitude, and engagement strategies; Lead fundraising campaigns as needed, including end of year appeal, special campaigns, and program specific campaigns; Review reports on lapsed members and pledges to provide direction and strategy for renewal, re-acquisition, etc; Engage in research and prospect identification to broaden the base of support for Rural Action’s work; Identify prospects (individual, corporate and philanthropic) with the potential to make major, unrestricted donations; Directly engage in fundraising activities, through a regular calendar of calltime and meetings with members; Identify, cultivate, and support the submission of grants that provide unrestricted core operating support for Rural Action. Communications Provide oversight and direction for the organization’s communication content calendar including planning for the Rural Rambler, social media, press releases, and other media outlets; Provide oversight for the accurate representation of Rural Action by ensuring all external communications are consistent with the organization’s brand guidelines; Track and aggregate monthly metrics to inform future decisions and strategies for the organization. Additional duties Coordinate and lead the planning effort with the Dev/Comms team for the Adventure Auction, Earth Ball, Annual Meeting, Annual Fundraiser(s), and Holiday Open House; Coordinate Rural Action’s current capital campaign including supervising the team; serving as the staff liaison to the campaign committee, and monitor campaign progress to ensure success to the $6m goal; Work with the team to recruit staff, interns, and AmeriCorps members (as applicable); Other duties as assigned. Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience; At least two years of proven experience raising funds through donors; Strong understanding of media, marketing, and communications tools and strategies including print, online, video, or other multimedia; Ability to use a database system to analyze information, develop prospects, and run reports; Demonstrated ability to think strategically and see the “big pictures;” A commitment to sustainable development and building healthy communities and strong local economies; NOTE:
