Position Summary
The library clerk is an entry-level library paraprofessional who performs many support activities in the successful operation of the academic library. The Library Clerk II will assist with technical and user services and work on special projects as assigned by the library director. The incumbent in this position will work under the direct supervision of the Library Director.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain library operations in the absence of the director or other senior staff, which includes opening and closing the facility and supervising student workers, ensuring they are familiar with library policies, practices, and procedures.
- Perform routine circulation tasks, including checking library materials in and out, processing fees, recording overdue returns, and other tasks necessary to ensure the efficient maintenance of circulating library materials.
- Serve as point person for regular book shelving and assist with collection maintenance.
- Serve as point person for print serials, physical media, and government documents, including retention, record maintenance, and shelving.
- Serve as the point person for room reservations.
- Answer general questions about library guidelines and procedures to promote library services, programs, and materials.
- Assist library patrons in using computers, equipment, and materials.
- Address and resolve complaints from patrons and/or staff, or forward them to the supervisor or senior library staff member, as necessary.
- Report and log technical issues to the IT and facilities departments.
- Stock and maintain library supplies such as printers and cleaning supplies.
- Keep relevant statistical records on library usage.
- Assist in maintaining a cooperative, friendly, and productive environment for learning, studying, and collaboration inside the library facility.
- Perform any related duties that the director or senior staff may assign.
Minimum Job Requirements: An associates degree or three years of experience will ensure that the qualified candidate has the academic proficiency to assist college-level students in the preliminary stages of information access. The requirements demonstrate the commitment and perseverance the suitable candidate should possess.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of library procedures and working tools in serials management and circulation desk operations.
- Knowledge of general office equipment and software programs.
- Working knowledge of institutional policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining directly to the library.
- Ability to explain work processes to student assistants and oversee work performed.
- Communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, subordinates, and library patrons.
- Ability to produce desired work outcomes, including quality, quantity, and timeliness.
- Ability to plan and organize work, time, and resources, and if applicable, that of subordinates.
- Flexibility, adaptability, and work as part of a team.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment to provide input on how to apply policies and procedures to specific situations.
- Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance within college expectations.
Physical Demands
- Standing for extended periods.
- Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 30 lbs. frequently.
- Bending, reaching, reaching overhead, stooping, and kneeling.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a typical office environment.
