The Shrine of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Albuquerque, NM, within the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, is seeking a full-time Director of Music and Organist. The role involves working with cantors, adult and children’s choirs to develop our sacred music program and oversee all liturgical music. The Director is responsible for directing all aspects of the sacred music program, including planning and providing music for weekend Masses, Holy Days of Obligation, funerals, weddings, and other liturgical celebrations. He/she will serve as the recommended musician for weddings and funerals at St. Bernadette or oversee and consult with other musicians, working with families to select appropriate liturgical music. The candidate should embrace the purpose of sacred music—glory of God and sanctification of the faithful—be proficient in choral conducting, chant, organ, and Catholic liturgy, and support the holiness of the liturgy. Requirements include a love for sacred music, chant, and relevant experience. The position reports directly to the pastor. The Director must lead the congregation in singing hymns, Mass parts, and chant, including solos during Mass, with an emphasis on incorporating chant as often as possible in an a cappella setting. Strong vocal skills and a clear understanding of chant music styles are essential. Responsibilities
Oversee, evaluate, and coordinate all sacred music, musicians, and choirs in collaboration with the pastor. Recruit, develop, and retain cantors and choir members for all Sunday Masses, Holy Days, and other liturgical celebrations. Hold regular choir practices and musical formation sessions. Arrange for organ or other music preparation at least 15 minutes before each Mass. Participate as a member of the parish staff, attending meetings as schedule permits, and maintain good relationships with all ministers. Find suitable substitutes during personal time off or vacation. Coordinate a unity choir once or twice a year, composed of various choirs. Organize an annual team-building dinner for all choirs. Help the parish deepen its understanding of sacred music, including chant within liturgy. Maintain good communication and servant leadership skills to engage with choir members, staff, and parishioners. Be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing, fully supportive of Church teachings and morals. Maintain up-to-date diocesan Safe Environment certification. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
