Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities which involve providing interpretive services or instruction for the deaf or hard of hearing in a state institution, school or agency. Typical Functions
Performs manual sign language interpretation for deaf or hard of hearing individuals. Accompanies individuals to medical or legal appointments, job interviews, counseling sessions and meetings to provide communication with hearing persons. Teaches manual sign language to staff, faculty or individuals. Provides individual counseling to deaf students or patients on an interim basis. Level Descriptor
This job family consists of only one level and incumbent employees are responsible for performing all functions related to the position to which assigned. Education and Experience
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of experience working with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and using manual sign language plus interpreter certification through the Oklahoma Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST) or the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or must be a trained evaluator for the Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST), Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI); or an equivalent combination of education or experience substituting an associate's degree in American Sign Language, deaf studies, or a closely related field, or 2 years of experience in educating, training, or evaluating individuals in the use of American Sign Language for the interpreter certification or trained evaluator requirement only. Note: Substitution will not be allowed for the one year of experience working with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and using manual sign language. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of manual sign language; and of the unique problems faced by the deaf or hard of hearing. Ability is required to provide interpretive services for the deaf or hard of hearing. Special Requirements

427.8. Additional Job Description
Position is located at Oklahoma School for the Deaf (OSD) in Sulphur. Essential Functions: Position is responsible for designing individual sign language development plans and managing sign language learning lab to aid employees in reaching their sign language skill levels including teaching sign language classes for students and staff. Applicant must be willing to perform all job-related travel. Trial period (if applicable) is required. Background Check: The Department of Rehabilitation Services will conduct a criminal background check on new hires as part of an offer of employment that is made contingent upon a successful criminal background check. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of American Sign Language. Demonstrates either at least Superior Level on Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) or at least ASL P14. Ability to teach ASL in all levels from novice to advanced. Preferred Qualifications: American Sign Language Skills. Knowledge in American Sign Language and Deaf Culture for instruction and more than three years' experience in teaching American Sign Language (high school, college, or community) and working with non-signers to intermediate signers to improve their signing skills in both receptive and expressive.
