The University of Houston-ClearLake (UHCL), a nationally ranked and regionally focusedcomprehensive university within the University of Houston System,seeks its next Dean of the College of Education (COE).
Situated on a 524-acre wildlife preserve, UHCL has become acornerstone of higher education in Texas. Since opening its doors in1974, the university has awarded more than 80,000 degrees, eachresulting in expanded employment prospects, brighter futures andchanged lives. UHCL is a regional comprehensive university that isclassified as a doctoral university and offers more than 90undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs through itsfour colleges: Business, Education, Human Sciences and Humanities,and Science and Engineering. The university annually enrolls morethan 9,000 students and has earned a distinctive reputation as astudent-centered, community-minded, partnership-orienteduniversity. UHCL's more than 80,000 alumni are leaders in a varietyof fields and include 10 astronauts, more than 400 CEOs and atleast one best-selling author. Through its ongoing communityengagement, UHCL has developed alliances with area businesses,organizations, schools, and governmental agencies that enhance theeducational, economic, cultural, scientific, and professionalenvironment across the region. The university is proud to beclassified as both a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and aMinority Serving Institution (MSI). During the 2021-2022 academicyear, UHCL welcomed its sixth president, RichardWalker, Ed.D., and its eleventh provost, ChristopherMaynard, Ph.D. UHCL is within close proximity to numerousscience and engineering-driven facilities, organizations andcomplexes including the Port of Houston, NASA's Johnson SpaceCenter, and several major chemical manufacturing operations. UHCLis located in Clear Lake, which is part of the Bay Area of thriving andcosmopolitan Houston thefourth-largest city in the United States and is near the charmingand historic city of Galveston and the broaderGalveston Bay.
The College ofEducation at University of Houston-Clear Lake is divided intofour departments that encompass 17 undergraduate degreeswith certification plans, eight graduate degrees and three doctoraldegrees program options as well as 16 post-baccalaureate teachercertification plans and four teaching minor options. Accreditedby the Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC), theCollege of Education at UHCL provides students ample opportunitiesto receive hands-on learning through professional developmentschool sites, partnerships, and innovative classes to give themreal-world experience. Faculty are active researchers andpractitioners, contributing to evolving teaching practices andacademic scholarship. The College is composed of the followingdepartments: Teaching, Learning, and Educator Preparation;Transformative Leadership, Counseling, and Innovation.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs andProvost, the next Dean will contribute to an emerging universityexperience, participate in institutional planning, build externalrelationships and community partnerships, develop fundraising andalumni relations efforts, and advance a welcoming culture. Tofulfill these needs, the next Dean will demonstrate a record ofadministrative leadership, which will include effective humanresource and financial experience, adeptness at conflict resolutionand negotiation, extensive experience with grants and partnerships,and a clear focus on student success. The next Dean will also havea record of instruction, scholarship, and research excellence thatmerits appointment as a tenured professor in one of the departmentsin the College of Education.
