Job Description Job Description: Histology Technician (Histotech) Position Summary: A Histology Technician prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination by pathologists. They work primarily in hospital labs, research institutions, or private pathology labs, ensuring that tissue samples are properly preserved, sectioned, stained, and mounted for diagnostic and research purposes.
Key Responsibilities: Receive and accession tissue specimens for processing.
Prepare tissue samples by embedding in paraffin wax and cutting thin sections using a microtome.
Stain tissue samples using standard histological techniques (e.g., H&E, special stains, IHC).
Label and organize slides for microscopic examination.
Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure quality control standards are met.
Monitor reagent levels and maintain proper documentation.
Collaborate with pathologists and lab personnel to ensure timely processing.
Adhere to safety and infection control standards in a lab setting.
Assist with troubleshooting of histology equipment and processes.
Required Skills & Qualifications: Associate degree or postsecondary certificate in Histotechnology or a related field.
Completion of an accredited Histotechnology program (NAACLS preferred).
Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
Familiarity with lab safety protocols and quality assurance standards.
Good communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Credentials: ASCP (HT or HTL) Certification - highly preferred or required by many employers.
Prior experience in a clinical or research histology lab setting.
Certification/Licensure Requirements by State: While most states do not require licensure, a few do. Here's a breakdown:
States That Require Licensure or Certification: Florida - State licensure required through the Florida Department of Health.
New York - Licensure required; histotechnologists must be licensed under the Clinical Laboratory Technology Practice Act.
