As a Senior Data Engineer at Torch.AI, you will be at the forefront of building software that scales across Torch.AI’s platform capabilities. Your software will be deployed across an array of operational and research & development efforts for mission-critical customer programs and projects.
Each of our customers requires unique technical solutions to enable an asymmetric advantage on the battlefield. Torch.AI’s patented software helps remove common obstacles such as manual-intensive data processing, parsing, and analysis, thereby reducing cognitive burden for the warfighter. Your code will advance back-end data orchestration and graph-compute capabilities to deliver elegant data and intelligence products. Responsibilities
Architect, build, and maintain data pipelines that integrate structured and unstructured data sources across systems and services. Drive continuous improvement in data governance, quality assurance, and documentation practices. Mentor junior engineers, provide guidance on design and implementation best practices, and lead code reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions. Contribute to cloud infrastructure design (e.g., AWS S3, EC2) and help scale storage and compute environments for performance and cost-efficiency. Partner with stakeholders to define data architecture requirements in support of platform, analytics, and AI/ML teams. Lead data format standardization and conversion efforts across JSON, Parquet, and Avro formats. Write and review backend services (primarily in Java, optionally Python) for data ingestion, transformation, and delivery. Design and implement data models in SQL and NoSQL environments (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Neo4j), enabling large-scale analytical and AI workloads. Lead the development and optimization of ETL workflows using tools like Apache NiFi, Airflow, and Kafka.
What We Value
B.S. degree in Computer Science, Technology, Engineering, or a relevant field. 7–10 years of experience in data engineering, software development, or related fields. Strong software engineering background with advanced proficiency in Java; working knowledge of Python is a plus. Expertise in ETL pipeline design, data transformation, and workflow orchestration. Advanced SQL skills and working knowledge of NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Neo4j). Familiarity with CI/CD, Git-based workflows, and modern software development practices. Experience working with cloud-native data tools and distributed storage (e.g., S3, HDFS). Understanding of API interactions (REST), JSON processing, and system interoperability. Industry experience, preferably within the defense industry and/or intelligence community or related sectors, a plus. Ability to convey complex technical concepts to stakeholders. Capability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams. Awareness of ethical considerations and responsible AI practices. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Experience with stream processing frameworks (e.g., Kafka, Spark Streaming) (not required, nice to have). Exposure to time-series data analysis or graph-based models (not required, nice to have). Working knowledge of IAM, security-focused design, or data privacy controls (not required, nice to have). Experience supporting or building tools for AI/ML platforms or data science enablement (not required, nice to have).
