LODI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: HEATING & AIR-CONDITIONING TECHNICIAN BASIC FUNCTION: Perform journey-level mechanical, plumbing and electrical work in the repair, inspection, servicing, maintenance, installation and alteration of District heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems and related equipment and facilities. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Individual positions may not perform all of the duties listed nor do these examples include all responsibilities of positions in this class. Install, service, inspect, regulate, maintain and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment such as boilers, exhaust fans, forced combination and absorption units, heat pumps and electrical cooling units; install ducts and units. E Install, repair or replace compressors, charge units, motors, fans, compressors, valves, controls, temperature control devices, pumps, water pressure regulators, cooling towers and other parts and systems; inspect, clean and replace filters as necessary. E Calibrate, clean, repair and replace electric, pneumatic and low-voltage controls, thermostats, timers, air handling and distribution equipment. E Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems; repair or replace defective parts in units, appliances and equipment and controls; observe and comply with federal, State and local building, health and safety codes and regulations. E Check and adjust temperatures or air conditioning equipment, furnaces, boilers and thermostats; clean, repair and replace worn parts of ventilator fans; add and maintain chemicals as appropriate. E Cut and thread pipe; perform welding, soldering and brazing. E Maintain a preventive maintenance program for District heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems. E Operate a variety of equipment and machinery such as various meters and testing devices, pressure gauges, vacuum pumps and hand tools; operate a District vehicle to conduct work. E Service electrical components, such as relays, contacts, starters, breakers and fuses; maintain current knowledge of regulations related to voltage, amperage and resistance; observe and comply with applicable federal, State and local health and safety laws. E Install, repair, service and maintain gas-fired kilns and water heaters and swimming pool heaters; maintain heating, circulation and water treatment systems for swimming pools. E Maintain routine records to maintenance and repair activities. E Prepare and work from sketches, plans, drawing, blueprints, specifications and electrical schematics. E Order parts and supplies according to established procedures; monitor inventory of supplies. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods, equipment and materials used in the HVAC trade. Manual and electrical tools and equipment applicable to the HVAC trade. Health and safety regulations. Applicable sections of State Education Code and other applicable laws. Basic record-keeping techniques. Technical aspects of field of specialty. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. ABILITY TO: Install, maintain and repair HVAC equipment and systems. Operate specialized machinery and equipment utilized in the HVAC trade. Diagnose malfunctions and determine repair needs. Install, repair and maintain electric and gas kitchen equipment. Work from blueprints and electrical schematics. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Work independently with little direction. Meet schedules and time lines. Plan and organize work. Maintain routine records. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by completion of apprenticeship program, college or technical school with courses in electrical and mechanical technology, principles of heating and cooling systems; extensive journey-level experience with a variety of commercial heating and cooling systems, steam and hot water boilers, chillers, pumps, motors and electrical, pneumatic and electronic controls. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver’s license. Refrigerant Recovery/Reclamation certification. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Fumes and noise from air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Incumbents may be required to respond to emergency calls. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lifting and carrying heavy objects. Climbing ladders. Walking and standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand tools and specialized equipment. HAZARDS: Electrical power supply and high voltage. Working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber. Exposure to vapors and fumes. Board Approved 11/2/99 Seniority level
