Position Summary:
This is an advanced-level scientific position requiring a PhD, Master's degree, or equivalent experience in microbiology, environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, or a closely related discipline. The role focuses on studying microbes in freshwater and/or soil environments to support product development and process improvement. The position involves independent research, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and mentoring responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities: Collaborate with subject matter experts and cross-functional teams to advance research objectives. Develop project proposals, environmental impact assessments, ROI analyses, and budgets with the manager. Design and lead experiments to monitor and characterize microbial populations in freshwater and soil ecosystems. Analyze data and prepare technical reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications. Present scientific findings at conferences, author posters, and contribute to patents as applicable. Develop, validate, and implement novel sampling and analysis protocols for environmental microbes. Mentor junior scientists and research technicians, providing training on environmental sampling and lab techniques. Manage project timelines and deliverables to meet complex deadlines. Draw meaningful conclusions and make recommendations to management based on experimental outcomes. Maintain and safeguard confidential and sensitive data with integrity. Stay current with scientific literature and emerging technologies in environmental microbiology and microbial ecology. Investigate and recommend new methods or technologies for field and laboratory applications. Apply advanced statistical methods and ecological modeling to interpret complex data sets. Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and, when needed, with customers, regulatory agencies, or partners. Help develop technical content to support marketing, outreach, and customer education efforts. Lead or contribute to cross-departmental projects advancing new product development or technology adoption. Participate in long-term strategic planning aligned with broader R&D goals. Maintain detailed laboratory notebooks, follow QA/QC procedures, and adhere to SOPs. Work safely and proactively contribute to improving laboratory and field safety practices.
Additional Responsibilities: Support other departmental research or operational needs as assigned. Participate in team meetings, strategy sessions, and training programs. Attend industry and company events as needed to stay informed on trends, innovations, and best practices in the industry.
Typical Work Environment: Majority of work is conducted in a laboratory environment and may require using caustics, high-pressure laboratory systems, biological materials, and toxic chemicals. Limited field sampling may be required but is not a major component of the role.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Training: Master's degree (PhD preferred) in environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, soil microbiology, aquatic microbiology, or related scientific field.
Relevant Experience: 8+ years studying microbes in freshwater and/or soil environments. Professional experience designing and conducting field and laboratory experiments to study microbial dynamics.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in microbiological, molecular, or biochemical techniques relevant to environmental sampling, DNA/RNA extraction, sequencing, and data analysis. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and ecological data analysis. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint. Familiarity with R, Python, QIIME2, or other microbial ecology toolkits preferred. Ability to learn project-specific software or laboratory information management systems (LIMS) in a timely manner. Advanced statistical methods and ecological modeling.
Non-Technical Skills: Strong verbal and written communication, scientific writing, and data interpretation skills. Positive, proactive attitude and collaborative mindset. Strong commitment to mentoring and supporting team development. Problem-solving ability and resourcefulness when troubleshooting experiments. Excellent organizational skills to balance multiple projects and deadlines. Innovative thinking and openness to new approaches and methods. Confidence to take ownership of projects and drive them to completion.
Licenses/Certifications: None required; relevant certifications in laboratory safety or bioinformatics preferred.
Physical Requirements: This role requires working in a laboratory setting handling environmental samples. Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. and perform tasks requiring frequent use of hands to handle objects, tools, and controls.
Safety Requirements: Consistent use of company-issued Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required. Must follow all company safety procedures and regulations to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
