Microbiology Supervisor
Location: PruittHealth Diagnostic Services laboratory department, Norcross GA
Reports to: Laboratory Manager
Job Purpose:
The Microbiology Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations in the microbiology laboratory. Supervise and train staff, perform and interpret microbiological tests, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain high-quality lab performance standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervisory & Administrative:
- Manage and train microbiology staff
- Oversee daily operations and workflow
- Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development
- Collaborate with Lab Manager and medical director on department goals and issue
Laboratory Operations:
- Perform, review, and interpret microbiology tests.
- Perform specimen processing as needed.
- Maintain and troubleshoot equipment and analyzers.
- Implement and update laboratory procedures.
- Monitor and review quality control, maintenance and participate in proficiency testing
- Ensure adherence to safety and compliance to regulatory agencies, GLP, cGMP, CLIA, CAP, The Joint Commissions, CMS, State, Federal and OSHA standards. Complete remedial actions when necessary.
Process Improvement & Compliance:
- Identify and resolve technical issues.
- Recommend process improvements.
- Ensure proper documentation and recordkeeping.
- Manage specimen collection, processing, and data entry.
- Maintain inventory and supply levels.
Communication & Collaboration:
- Communicate effectively with patients and staff.
- Train and support new employees.
- Represent the lab professionally and maintain confidentiality.
- Coordinate and consult with lab managers and administrators regarding lab related issues.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, LIS, and relevant lab software.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Committed to continuing education and compliance.
Essential Functions:
- Use electronic systems such as Outlook, LIS, and MatrixCare.
- Maintain a clean, stocked, and safe work environment.
- Follow infection control and safety protocols.
- Maintain professional appearance, attendance, punctuality, and a positive attitude.
- Represent PruittHealth in alignment with company values and patient care standards.
Qualifications:
Minimum Education Requirements:
Candidates must meet one of the following education/experience requirements:
- B.S. degree in medical technology, or chemical, physical, or biological sciences, plus three (3) years experience in a clinical laboratory.
- B.S. degree in medical technology, or chemical, physical, or biological sciences, plus successful completion of a specialist certification exam (SH ASCP, SBB ASCP, SM-ASCP, SC-ASCP, SI-ASCP or DLM ASCP) with a total of three (3) years experience in a clinical laboratory.
- Master's degree in administration, management, medical technology, chemical, physical, or biological science with three (3) years experience in a clinical laboratory.
- State recognized certification as a Medical Technologist.
Minimum Experience:
- 1 year experience preferred, not required.
Licensure/Certification required by law:
- Current ASCP, AAB or AMT certification
- Must pass a standardized color blindness test
