Position Overview

Position Overview
The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, a Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE SC) national research facility, seeks a Project Director with multi-decadal experience in synchrotron radiation-based or x-ray free electron laser (XFEL)-based instrumentation development as well as proven leadership performance in DOE O 413.3b projects. The successful candidate will lead preparation for and execution of a line-item DOE O 413.3b project.
Specific Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
- The successful Project Director candidate will be responsible for all aspects of project strategic leadership, planning, and execution including preliminary budget and schedule development consistent with DOE guidance and DOE O 413.3b requirements, stakeholder interfacing, high level project management (working in conjunction with a project manager), DOE O 413.3b compliance, critical staffing, project execution safety, and technical scope definition, management, and execution as the project proceeds through the DOE O 413.3b gating decisions CD0 to CD4.
- Ensure effective cooperation and coordination between the project team and SLAC operations stakeholders.
- Interface with the SLAC Office of Project Management.
- Mentor project technical staff for successful and efficient execution of the DOE O 413.3b project.
- Achieveproject objectives through leadership of technical and managerial staff engaged in developing, advancing and applying science, engineering and technology; typically involving multiple levels of professional and managerial staff.
- Manage the adoption and adaptation of emerging technologies to meet project requirements, capabilities, and opportunities.
- Collaborate with university leaders on scientific, engineering or technical research project decisions.
- Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, material science, engineering, or related field with at least 10 years of post-Ph.D. professional experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
- Record of instrumentation development for synchrotron or XFEL radiation that demonstrates competence in technical project scope definition, technical decision making, technical team leadership, and technical project execution.
- Prior leadership or management experience in a DOE O 413.3b accelerator-based project that demonstrates capacity to direct a project with significant technical scope and complexity to a successful conclusion. Such experience must include responsibility for a major element of such a project including scope definition, budget and schedule development, execution planning, staffing, risk assessment and management, earned value management, change control, contingency management, configuration management, documentation, safety, and stakeholder engagement, communication, and consensus building.
- Effective written, verbal, and presentation-based communication skills.
- Extensive experience leading and managing a large organization of technical staff through subordinate managers.
- Exceptional customer relationship and consensus building skills.
- Ability to influence and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment. Motivate and mentor staff.
- Resolve complex issues quickly and make decisions that meet project objectives in a collaborative culture
- Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, material science, engineering, or related field with at least 10 years of post-Ph.D. professional experience.
