The Legislative Advocate (Deputy Attorney General) is a subject matter expert on designated subjects and legislative procedures related to the California Department of Justice.
The advocate serves as the department’s liaison and legislative expert to the California State Legislature, their staff, lawyers, and consultants; the Legislative Analyst; Office of Legislative Counsel; California State Auditor; Governor’s Office; other state agencies; and stakeholders and associations. They represent the department on all related legislative matters before the California State Legislature under the direction of the Director of Legislative Affairs.
Responsibilities include analyzing legislation and amendments within their portfolio, coordinating with department experts and attorneys to assess legal, policy, and fiscal impacts, and developing strategies such as drafting amendments or facilitating policy discussions among stakeholders. They assist in drafting legislation for the Attorney General's legislative package and advise legislative staff and committee consultants on legal, technical, and policy implications.
This role requires frequent communication under tight deadlines, consulting with attorneys, legislators, and stakeholders to address complex issues and produce analyses with minimal supervision.
