Job Description
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for an individual with strong technical skills to work in Structures Design as the Structures Design Engineer (Engineer III) preparing plans, specifications, and engineer's estimates for bridges, box culverts, retaining walls, and other miscellaneous structures associated with UDOT Projects. Design can include the Digital Delivery environment and opportunities to build upon the Departments efforts to implement this technology. This person will fill an important role within the Structures Division and have the opportunity to deliver projects by collaborating with other talented individuals.
Principal Duties
As the Structures Design Engineer (Engineer III), you will:
- Perform structural analysis and design.
- Check analysis and design notes.
- Prepare and check technical reports, calculations, plans, specifications, and estimates for new structures, structures in need of preservation and rehabilitation, emergency projects, and other exciting projects.
- Support technical analysis and reviews associated with updating design manuals and specifications.
- Prepare engineering and design documents using computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment.
- Discuss, review and interpret plans and specifications.
- Analyze, summarize and/or review data; report findings, interpret results and/or make recommendations.
- Provide support during the construction phase of projects.
- May participate in the planning, designing, construction and maintenance of structures. May include participating in structures inspections during construction or in-service inspections.
- Participate in a variety of activities including feasibility, materials, research, exploring innovative concepts, design, concept and scoping, environmental, safety, specifications, schedules, revisions in support of delivering projects.
In order to qualify for this position, you must be registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.
Underfill
This position may be filled as either an Engineer II or Engineer I for those who are not registered professional engineers. This includes those that are licensed in other states pending licensure in Utah.
- The qualifications for the Engineer II ($40.24 - $57.57) level are:
- A bachelor's degree, or higher, in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE).
- At least two years of post-graduate engineering experience.
- The qualifications for the Engineer I ($35.93) level are:
- A bachelor's degree, or higher, in a Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline.
- Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE).
Preferences
Preference may be given to applicants with significate experience designing transportation structures.
Hiring officials may identify additional related skills and requirements as preferences in making hiring and promotion decisions.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Here are some of the knowledge, skills and abilities that are typically associated with the job, though not all-inclusive:
- knowledge of principles, theories, and practices of structural engineering
- knowledge of QC/QA processes used in structural design
- ability to use State or agency-specific software application program(s); skilled in the use of spreadsheets and software used for structural analysis
- knowledge of MicroStation and Inroads is useful; use CADD/ computer assisted drafting and design
- ability to use engineering data processing application programs
- ability to use logic to analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions
- ability to find, gather and collect information or data
- ability to evaluate information against a set of standards
- ability to read and interpret maps, plats, charts, plans, blueprints and/or electrical schematics
- ability to speak clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally
- ability to ensure compliance with contract terms, policies and procedures, etc.
- ability to use scientific methods to solve problems
- knowledge of research methods, techniques, and/or sources of information
- ability to perform scientific and/or technical research

- Working Conditions - Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
- Physical Requirements - Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
- Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
