The Department of Pathology at Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is seeking a full-time faculty to join our Division of Diagnostic Genetics and Genomics to lead a team of applications programmers, database programmers, and bioinformaticists. The overall Division of Diagnostic Genetics and Genomics includes the Cytogenetics, Molecular Genetics Laboratory (germline), and Molecular Diagnostic (somatic/oncology) laboratories. This team will collaborate closely with Pathology Informatics, the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology, and the Genomics Core Laboratory and will be able to leverage the expertise of these groups.
The division performs or is currently validating assays that generate large amounts of data, including small targeted next generation sequencing (NGS) panels, large comprehensive cancer NGS panels (pair tumor-normal, whole transcriptome), whole genome sequencing, optical genome mapping, and chromosomal microarrays in addition to a full menu of single gene assays and other cytogenetic methods. These assays require division-wide solutions for sample tracking and handling through the laboratory, sequencing, bioinformatic pipelines, data analysis, data visualization, variant databases, and user interfaces for report generation. These solutions must be developed within an integrated informatics ecosystem and maintained for excellent and continuous clinical production. In addition, development of novel solutions and/or bioinformatic modules will be necessary to provide state-of-the-art precision medicine. Academic opportunities abound to utilize the acquired genomic data and metadata in translational research as well as academic publishing of development processes.
The applicant should have a PhD in computer science or related field with at least 5-10 years of leadership experience in a business/professional environment with a demonstrable portfolio of prior completed projects, including familiarity with project management and software development tools.Excellent communication skills are required.
The laboratories serve a 900-bed adult tertiary care hospital, a 175-bed pediatric hospital, expanding outpatient services at over 20 sites, and a growing reference laboratory business. The laboratories are located in a state-of-the-art new facility that fosters collaboration and innovation. They support a Comprehensive Cancer Center as part of a world-class medical center.
