Job Description The City of Avondale is accepting applications for the position of Detention Officer. T
his is a full-time, FLSA-non-exempt position with benefits, including the Arizona Correction Officers Retirement Plan. Provides care, custody, and control of inmates at the Avondale Police Department Detention Center. Provides support functions for the Avondale Police Patrol Division and Tolleson Police Patrol Division in conducting transports of arrested subjects to the 4th Avenue Jail. Ensures completion of all bookings and processes for newly arrested subjects' misdemeanor and/or felony offenses. Ensures to maintain proper accountability and use of supplies for staff and inmate population. Responsible for a clean, safe environment in the jail. Conducts numerous counts of the inmate population, including fire and safety inspections, and ensures that inmates are released appropriately. Supervises visitation and notifies victims of inmate releases, warrant pick-ups, and services of Orders of Protection and Injunctions Against Harassment. Assists in functions of patrol units to pick up and transport prisoners when required. Essential Functions
Assists the general public with questions regarding the status of housed inmates and directs callers to appropriate agencies.
Maintains daily logs of shift activity by creating and maintaining arrest files on all persons processed through the Avondale Police Department. Maintains inventory of all forms needed by Detention and Patrol.
Processes inmates/prisoners by completing paperwork, searching prisoners, fingerprinting, interviewing for any medical conditions, confiscating prisoner property, and taking photos.
Provides care, custody, and control of the facility and inmates contained at the Avondale Police Department Detention Center by distributing meals, performing inmate movements, releases, bond procedures, overseeing visitation, responding to medical emergencies, and processing inmate mail.
Ensures timely court appearances for all prisoners by escorting prisoners to City Court for appearances, preparing bond receipts, and collecting bonds. Prepares inmates for video court, sends court list to court clerks, and manages inmate movement during video court.
Maintains working vehicle by managing routine maintenance and fueling duties.
Purchases food and prepares meals for inmates by shopping and storing food, preparing food, and dispensing meals on weekends and holidays.
Attends required departmental meetings and training. Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required.
Successful graduation from an accredited Police Academy, Corrections Academy, or Detention Academy is required.
At least two (2) years of experience as a Detention Officer, Corrections Officer, or Police Officer.
Valid Arizona Operator's Driver's License.
Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological examination, medical exam, and drug screen. Supplemental Information
Work requires the ability to read court documents, city and state criminal code catalogs, OSHA regulations, computer printouts, police reports, and victim rights material.
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Work requires the ability to write police reports and fill out forms, monthly statistical reports, and daily activity reports on any criminal activities concerning inmates.
Planning responsibilities include planning work details for inmates and ordering supplies and food to ensure adequate amounts are available. Organization and time management skills are utilized daily in prisoner management, transport, and court operations.
The incumbent may be assigned to prepare documents and perform research to recommend budget allocations.
Work involves the ability to make decisions within set standard practices and procedures. Professional judgment is required to apply the proper course of action.
The incumbent in this position has contact with others within the organization and may involve similar work units or departments within the City, such as Courts, which may be involved in decision-making or providing approval or decision-making recommendations for purchases or projects. In addition, the incumbent works with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations and various state and federal agencies. The incumbent may be assigned to work in specialty groups, committees, and meetings that may be conducted with peers and others, as designated by the supervisor.
