Phipps Neighborhoods, the social service affiliate of Phipps Houses, has been a catalyst for community growth and empowerment for over 50 years. Serving approximately 14,000 New Yorkers annually, we address barriers to educational achievement, economic security, and career stability through three key program areas:
Education and School-Day Programs : Offering pre-kindergarten services, community schools, after-school programs, and college access counseling. Sector-Focused Training and Employment Placement Pathways : Providing specialized training, employment placement pathways, Summer Youth Employment, Work Learning Grow initiatives, and aiding residents in accessing new employment opportunities. Community & Economic Empowerment Services : Enabling community progress through community centers, resident services, food access, financial literacy programs, and support accessing benefits and wellness services.
We collaborate with government, corporate, and philanthropic partners to effect significant and lasting social change, fostering thriving communities.
** MUST BE ABLE TO WORK MONDAY - FRIDAY 2:00pm - 6:00pm **
Position Summary:
Group Leaders are responsible for supervising program participants, ensuring their safety, and fostering a positive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environment. The ideal candidate works closely with a small group of elementary, middle, or high school students to support their growth and success in both academic and non-academic areas by facilitating age-appropriate activities in a school or center-based after-school program. This role involves implementing and actively participating in a variety of activities that engage students in a dynamic, academically supportive, and culturally enriching environment.
Part-Time Group Leaders work 20 hours per week. Most work schedules are between 2 PM and 6 PM, Monday to Friday. Other part-time schedules may be available depending on need at some locations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Facilitate age-appropriate activities and ensure participant safety at all times, including during classroom sessions, bathroom breaks, gym time, field trips, and snack. Use effective classroom management strategies to keep participants engaged in structured activities. Create a supportive learning environment with clear, consistent, age-appropriate expectations and rules. Model positive behavior and developmentally appropriate practices. Accurately track attendance, activity logs, and sign-out records. Attend professional development on lesson planning and curriculum development aligned with program themes and outcomes. Participate in required staff meetings, professional development, and program events. Complete 15 hours of SACC (School-Age Child Care) training within three months of hire and maintain annual compliance. Interact professionally and respectfully with children, families, staff, and community members. Follow all program policies and procedures, including appropriate use of materials and supplies. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment. Communicate regularly and effectively with supervisors and team members. Engage in mentorship with a Senior Group Leader. Maintain up-to-date background clearances throughout employment. Perform other duties as assigned by Program or Phipps Leadership.
Qualifications:
Willingness to undergo background checks and ability to attain full clearance Strong oral and written communication skills Effective classroom management and interpersonal skills Computer literacy required Energetic, creative, and self-motivated Strong work ethic and sense of urgency Bilingual (Spanish) preferred
