Principal Scientist, R&D – Analytical Science
ABOUT
This Principal Scientist position in the Food Engineering Division within Analytical Sciences is located at our Glenview, IL Kraft Heinz Innovation Center. This is an ideal opportunity for a scientist passionate about leading the design of experiments, root cause analysis studies, and kinetics studies encompassing, but not limited to, product quality and shelf-life testing. This position will also serve as the SME for analytical data processing, analysis, and modelling (e.g., linking chemistry and sensory) to elucidate key business insights by leveraging advanced data application software, AI technology, and statistical principles for R&D and field-to-shelf business decisions. The role emphasizes cross-functional holistic problem solving with R&D, Product Development, Quality, Operations, and Factory personnel to identify needs and develop capabilities that advance KH's agenda for a wide range of leading food products.
RELATIONSHIPS (EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL):
Collaborate with internal teams including R&D, Product Development, Quality, Operations, and Factory personnel.
Represent Kraft Heinz when working with external professionals from consortiums and universities.
Interact with instrument and software vendors, ingredient suppliers, co-manufacturing facilities, and external lab partners.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Skilled in designing experiments for complex food systems using techniques like Full Factorial, Fractional Factorial, and Response Surface Methodology.
Apply statistical models using tools such as Minitab, SAS, R, Python, and MATLAB to predict quality changes and optimize processes.
Deep knowledge of kinetics fundamentals, including structure-function relationships, food matrix mechanisms, and reaction rates in enzymatic browning, lipid oxidation, discoloration, fermentation, etc.
Ability to process and interpret data using PCA, PLS, regression trees, etc., for R&D and cross-functional projects.
Translate large datasets into effective visualizations and presentations using Tableau or similar tools to communicate insights.
Hands-on experience with analytical instrumentation such as GC-MS and LC-MS, from sample prep to data analysis.
Experience with hypothesis validation and discovery-driven analysis in analytical science.
Preferred: Ability to integrate multidisciplinary data (microbiology, chemistry, physics, omics) to draw comprehensive conclusions.
Knowledge of food manufacturing and packaging processes.
Strong critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills.
Self-starter, resourceful, organized, and process-oriented.
Experience in leading and supervising technical teams and projects.
Education and Experience:
BS, MS, or PhD in science, engineering, or related fields with substantial industrial experience.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Travel: 0-20%

$102,100 - $127,600
