Reporting to the Executive Director of Development in University Relations with a dotted line to the Dean, the CDO is the chief fundraiser for the College of Arts and Humanities. This individual will be responsible for the identification of major and principal level donors, and will lead a comprehensive engagement and fundraising program to support ARHU's strategic initiatives.
The CDO will serve as a member of the Dean's senior staff and partner with the Dean and key faculty in the development and successful implementation of strategies to advance the ARHU's goals through philanthropic support. This individual will partner with the Dean in the design, recruitment, support and management of the Dean's Advisory Board.
The CDO will oversee a talented team of major gift officers who focus on soliciting gifts from alumni, corporations and foundations, and friends of the College. The CDO will also lead and guide additional advancement professionals who support ARHU's alumni engagement and donor relations and stewardship efforts. The CDO is responsible for meeting and exceeding set metrics, keeping the team motivated and on task, and exploring and creating new philanthropic strategies to support the College's fundraising goals. The CDO will be a key development leader in the launch and success of the upcoming Forward Campaign, working collaboratively across University Relations and ARHU to set campaign priorities and strategize opportunities for donor cultivation and solicitation.
The Chief Development Officer will regularly collaborate with central University Relations teams including, the Office of Gift Planning, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Broad Based Campaigns and Strategic Engagement, Regional Giving, Prospect Management and Research, Donor Relations and Stewardship, the Alumni Association, the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, and Principal Gifts to advance the College's philanthropic objectives. Further, they will coordinate with these teams as necessary to create strategic development events and develop ARHU's major gifts pipeline..

Preferences: Master's degree from an accredited college or university. Previous experience in higher education institutions. Experience with other aspects of fundraising, including planned giving and corporate and foundation. Background or strong interest in programs promoting the arts and humanities. Experience managing an advisory board
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Entrepreneurial and strategic fundraiser. Ability to understand the development needs and constituencies of the many different programs that make up the College of Arts and Humanities. Self-motivated professional with the ability to assertively create and cultivate relationships. Ability to identify and build constituencies for support, in setting and achieving individual and group goals, and in planning and executing campaigns. Knowledgeable about best practices in the advancement field. Exceptional verbal, editing management and organization skills. The ability to relate with department chairs, center directors, and research faculty to articulate priorities, accomplishments, and aspirations to these diverse external audiences.
Physical Demands: Work is performed in a traditional office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Some occasional evening and weekend work is required as necessary. Travel is required up to 40% of the time. Driver's license and access to a vehicle required.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
Nine (9) years of fundraising experience, including experience in major and principal gifts. Two (2) years of experience leading, supervising, or managing professional staff.
Knowledge of the principles of management and leadership. Knowledge of financial policies and procedures, and federal, state, and other applicable human resources related laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to work on multiple projects and programs simultaneously. Ability to conduct research and analysis for aid program development. Ability to analyze data and provide insight and recommendations to stakeholders. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. Ability to resolve complex financial related problems by applying various methodologies and deciding between several alternative solutions.
